Monitor for casual gaming. ~$200-$300 budget

Hi everyone,

I'm seeking help with choosing a monitor to suit the specs below.
I'm new to monitor selection, but I have read a few websites like Toms hardware etc, but I still feel a little lost.
It will be used for casual gaming, and basic home usage, so it doesn't need to be spectacular.
I'm currently playing fallout 4, but will try newer titles with the new computer.

I was thinking of going for 27", FHD, 60/75 Hz (to try and meet the budget). The rest will be decided by the cost
My initial budget was $200-$300, but that may increase as this seems low.

These are the basic specs
- AMD Ryzen 7 7700X 4.5 GHz 8-Core Processor
- Asus DUAL OC Radeon RX 6600 XT 8 GB Video Card
- 32 gb ram

I'm open to any suggestion and happy to wait for delivery.
Located in Brisbane if that helps.

Thank you very much :)

Edit:
My current monitor is an acer s273hl, so I'm used to 27", but will see what I can find.
I am going to keep my old computer running so I need another monitor, and from what I can see the newer monitors are much better.

Go for a 24 inch for 1080p or 27 inch 1440p for optimal ppi, AOC 24G2SP is a good budget gaming monitor and in your budget.

    • Thanks for the model.
It is in the short list, a 1 minute look has it for $259 pickup

Is it any better than the AOC G2790VX 27" 144Hz Full HD ($239 + S&H)?

It is a 2" size different, a slower refresh rate, and non adjustable stand. Anything else I have missed?
      Thank you

It's a VA panel whereas the 24G2SP is IPS. Better off with the AOC 27G2SP which is IPS if you must have a 27 Inch.

        • Ahh, I missed that.
My current monitor is an acer s273hl, so I'm used to 27", so I'll keep the AOC 27G2SP in mind.
          Thanks a lot.

You can maximize your specs if you go 27-31" 1440p 144hz-165hz ips/VA + HDR, LG and Samsung has monitors in this range for less than 400

    Get 144hz at a minimum

    • That's the feedback I am getting here, and from others. Thanks

Just out of curiosity why did you choose AM5 platform? Also go 27 minimum, I've bought the lenovo G27q QHD 165 Hz monitor, not bad for $320 on prime day

    • Thanks for the model.
It is in the short list, a 1 minute look has it for $269 + S&H

I currently have a very old AM4 platform.
I originally was going to upgrade it, but I needed a new case (current one is damaged), new cpu, new gpu, more ram, and a few fans. I also wanted a larger SSD and a larger HDD.

Early estimates were ~$600 (very budget) to close to $2000.
In the end I decided on a completely new build.
I was going to get a 12600k, but I missed a really good mobo+cpu sale, and ended up waiting to see what else popped up. After that I was going to get a 7600x, but the 7700x was on sale for ~$20 more so i bought that instead.

      • Yeah their CPUs are comparable in price with Intel but their motherboard prices, holy crap!!
I remember getting my Gigabyte Z690 Aorus Elite AX (DDR5) for just $270 last EOFY. AM5 motherboard prices are ridiculous.

        • They are.
I almost sat on the parts for a bit to wait for a sale, but I need the computer running soon

I got AOC 27G2SP for $299, now it is $339 at most shops

27" IPS FHD 165 Hz, works well with G-SYNC

Thanks for the model, its currently $339 pickup.
If i have a good look, or wait for a deal. i may find it cheaper.
Another used recommended a 24" version, as well as the 27" of this monitor, so its definitely on my list.

It would help if you listed what kinds of games you like to play. These days, the purchasing considerations around a monitor to play AAA games vs FPS only vs a range of games are going to lead to quite different recommendations.

    • Good idea.
At the moment I'm playing fallout 4. I would like to play COD MW2 and Sons of the forest.
I also play a lot of indie games and roguelikes.
I have been keeping away from high demand games as my computer could not run them, so I'm not up to date on what other games I may enjoy.

Based on your description, I would describe your use case as quite varied. As others have said, I think 1440p/144 Hz is a good balance for an all-around gaming monitor. Keep in mind, however, that the perception of motion clarity at the same refresh rate can vary significantly based on pixel response times and the panel technology used. I have used budget 144 Hz displays which handle motion significantly worse than an old 60 Hz monitor with a G-Sync module. Good resources for researching the experience you can expect from specific monitors beyond the spec sheets are rtings.com and the Monitors Unboxed/Hardware Unboxed Youtube channels. I would try to expand your budget a bit if you can. It really is quite a different experience gaming on a display that handles motion well. Good luck

Thanks for the feedback, i will look into those resources.
