Rex Airlines - Chubb Travel Insurance Claim

I can't take my not refundable flight OOL-MEL next month with Rex Airlines - however I did take out their optional Chubb Travel insurance when booking online.

So how can I claim back the airfare using the travel insurance - anyone know a loophole? Died prior to flight will require a death certificate unfortunately - but a "no fly" medical could work, would one from my Chiropractor work? (Has a bad back).

Here's the Chubb PDS if anyone's interested.

  • Section A Cover Descrption is pretty self-explanatory.

If you can get a letter from a certified Doctor that you cannot travel due to medical issue then should be fine. Else, tough luck.

  • Did you read the PDS from front cover to back cover? Did you understand it?

    • it's only 46 pages.

      • Is that a yes then?

    anyone know a loophole?

    aka insurance fraud?

    • Using a loophole isn’t fraud. It’s doing something unintended, but legitimate. Though this kind of does sound like fraud

  • Chiropracters don't issue Death Certificates, unless they are Real Doctors.

    Rex have a https://www.rex.com.au/FlightInfo/PDF/MEDICAL_CERT_FITNESS_T…
but generally used to say Fit to Fly.

If a GP said NO to most of it, you might get a claim up with Chubb under
"You or Your Travelling Companion being, in the opinion of a
treating Doctor, unfit to begin or continue Your Trip due an
Injury, suffering an unforeseen Illness or dying before or during
Your Trip;" but NOT for a Pre-existing condition.

    PRIOR TO TRAVEL

If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms prior to your Rex flight, you must defer your travel in accordance with the Fare Rules and contact your travel insurance provider.

You can review the Fare Rules, which outline the permitted changes to your ticket, here.

If you are unable to travel due to contracting COVID-19 (and are required to isolate for the date travel is booked), you may place the ticket on hold for future use (without fee) with supporting documentation. Fare differences may apply when rebooking.

Acceptable supporting documentation is a copy/screenshot of a positive PCR test notification, declaration to state government of positive Rapid Antigen Test or equivalent (with name and date clearly visible).

  • I'll be asking my teams to keep a lookout for a claim related to a Rex flight for someone with a bad back! 😊

    • There’s RE agents, car salesmen and then there’s Insurance Companies.
Insurance companies pull all kinds of sh1t to avoid a payout, I’m doing likewise but in reverse. Erring on the side of caution, I’ll ask my chiropractor to write “due to recent injury travel is unadviseable for he next 4 weeks.”

      • Well, you will just get a "Claim" Denied and push everyone else's Premiums up or they will defer your "Claim" ask you to have a REAL Doctor provide Reports of the Injury, with an Accident Report, X-Rays etc.

If you have preexisting Back Condition and have seen a Chiropractor they will need to state how long you have been a Patient and you may have already breached your Duty to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation.

Did you disclose having a Back Condition or seeing a Chiropractor on the proposal?

You may also have to disclose in the future to any Insurer that you lodged a Claim and that it was deferred or denied under your Duty of Disclosure obligations.

  • What is the claim excess?

    • Probably one cent less than the Airfare claim being sought.
