Android Notification with No App?

I keep missing deals on things I have set an alert to. I know I'm being fussy but I don't want to install an app and I don't want to enable email notifications (my email doesn't notify me anyway).

Is it possible to have the web app ping me when a search term is matched through a setting and if I put the OzBargain page on my phone home screen?

It may be possible to receive alerts for search terms on Ozbargain through browser notifications. This would allow you to receive alerts on your phone without having to install an app or enable email notifications.

To set up browser notifications, you would need to allow Ozbargain to send you notifications through your web browser. This can usually be done by clicking on the lock icon next to the web address in your browser and selecting "Allow" under Notifications.

Once you've enabled notifications, you can set up an alert for a specific search term by performing a search on Ozbargain and then clicking on the "Alert" button at the top of the search results page. This will allow you to receive notifications whenever a new deal matching your search term is posted.

By adding the Ozbargain page to your phone's home screen, you can quickly access the site and view any notifications that you receive. Keep in mind that this method may not be as reliable as installing an app or enabling email notifications, as browser notifications may be affected by factors like internet connectivity and browser settings.

  • If you are an Android user, please read the Instructions on how to allow Ozbargain to send you notifs.

    For iFruit device users:

Web push notifications are not supported on older versions of Safari.

You will need IOS 16.4 or iPad OS 16.4 Beta for this feature to work. You can enrol in IOS Beta program if you want this feature right away or wait for a stable release from Apple.

Websites that are saved as web apps to the Home Screen can send iPhone and iPad users Web Push notifications through the Push API, Notifications API, and Service Workers. A web app added to the ‌Home Screen‌ can ask the user permission to send push notifications, as described by Apple's WebKit team.

A web app that has been added to the Home Screen can request permission to receive push notifications as long as that request is in response to direct user interaction — such as tapping on a 'subscribe' button provided by the web app. iOS or iPadOS will prompt the user to give the web app permission to send notifications. The user can then manage those permissions per web app in Notifications Settings — just like any other app on iPhone and iPad.

The current issue is that the notification is sent from a service worker script that might not be active after you close the OzBargain tab or close the browser. I will be looking for an alternate integration later this year (if such solution exists).

  • Thanks for the replies all, lots to investigate now. All the best in the upgrade scotty.
