Long Expiring Plan Running out of Data

So I've been using long expiry plans for as long as I remember and my data usage was always under control and had plenty until the plan expired.

Until recently the last plan I had to recharge it a few months early due to a shortage of data. Surprisingly, I have run out of data on the new recharge when I've gone with a plan with a larger data allowance in 2 months. This is so frustrating as for some reason my data usage has gone out of control all of the sudden.

I am using an iPhone 13 ProMax, is this any way to get more data at a cheaper cost than recharging my plan? Moving forward what would be the better option for me? Go with a month to month? Buy a larger data allowance plan?

More details required. (If you were my wife, I'd tell you to ease up on watching crap on Facebook when not on WiFi.)

    • Disable all background data and preloading on all the crapps like fb, ig, tt etc.

  • It's a recent iPhone, they chew data more than any other phone ;) Install an app to track data and see where it's going …

Turn all the extra data using services off, but it does affect the user experience :/

  • OP, does your phone company allow donations from another plan? Data you haven't used each month on one plan, donated to another plan, is free.

  • I had my data run out a couple of months before my 1 year expiry ran out. Got a cheap second sim (or esim) and set that sim up for data only, with calls and text to my regular number. Kogan mobile has esim/regular sim offers, I used Boost 1 month $8 plan with $13 cashback.

    • I did exactly this. Woolies mobile as my primary as I want Telstra coverage when needed. Got a cheap Amaysim esim in addition and run it for data most of the time

  • Turn off iCloud sync over mobile.

Who would know, you haven't told us what plan you're on, how long the recharge is for or how much data you got that you have used up.

Did your old plan charge per KB and your new plan per MB?

    Plans charge in data sessions.
If that data session is charged per KB then you'll be charged relatively accurately (rounding up to a KB shouldn't be too bad). However, if it is charged per MB then even if only 100KB is used, the whole MB is charged, and that adds up.

Eg. Data session uses 1001 bytes.
Plan A might round that up to 2KB.
Plan B might round that up to 1MB.

    Data session uses 1,000,001 bytes.
Plan A might round that up to 1001KB.
Plan B might round that up to 2MB.

    • That must be the reason!
