Your Thoughts on Cheap Solar Systems?

Solarmaxx is offering me a 6.6kw fully installed system (14 x Astro energy panels, 5kwh Growatt inverter) for only $3500. What could go wrong? They actually have excellent reviews and the sales rep claims that they use their own CEC accredited installers in NSW, not sub-contractors. Price is more than $1000 cheaper than the lowest quote I got out of nearly a dozen, and almost half the price of the "big name companies". This also includes a 10 year workmanship warranty, inverter 10 yrs, panels 25 years. The company has been operating for 5 years so it is unlikely that they would fold overnight or suddenly close down.

My only criticism, which seems quite widespread in this industry, is the use of fake names. The sales reps and other staff are often from South Asian countries such as India, but represent themselves using fake names such as "John Smith" or "Tom Jones". I have questioned them about this and been told this is due to "privacy reasons" or because their birth names are "difficult to pronounce". It still seems dubious, if you ask me.

I'm sure we have all heard about cheap solar nightmare stories which reinforce the saying "you get what you pay for". In saying that, there are some very competitive companies out there who just want to grow their business and do a good install for the customer whilst operating on small profit margins.

I don't want to nickel and dime down to the cheapest of the cheapest products and installers but Solar is really only viable for me if the system is under $5000 due to payback period. My power consumption is quite low at 3kWh per day only.

Bought mine for $2250 a year and a bit ago off here
No issues, growatt inverter, seraphim panels. The seller is literally a retailer and subcontracts out to the same company (the company that installed it did everything from $250k installs down to mine).

$3500 isn't actually that cheap, it's about par.

That's good to hear. Where I am in NSW you generally expect to pay $1000 per kilowatt. So a typical 6.6 kw system is generally $6000 - 6500, but I have had prices ranging from $3500 - $8000.

    Buy once, cry once.

Buy once, cry for 25 years ;(

      • or until paid back ;)

We got told the newer panels will outlast their warranty. Inverters not so much so we saved money here buy going with Growatt. This was 2.5 years ago and the 6.6kw system paid for itself last month.

  • Try it and let us know how you go.

but represent themselves using fake names such as "John Smith" or "Tom Jones".

it's not unusual for them to use those aliases.

    "3kWh per day"
Do you have a fridge? We used 15 yesterday with only two in the house, didn't even cook as had leftovers in the microwave
    .

Sounds like you'd be better sticking that $5k in an ING account and earning interest, even if you can shift your entire 3kWh usage to the middle of the day the payback period will be longer than your warranty.

    Why bother?

    • Thanks man. I never thought of it that way. Most solar companies do inflate the numbers to make the break even period quicker and therefore more appealing.

      • +2

I actually had mine installed last week, the story they spun on "this is the repay period… you'll probably do even better!" was pretty spectacular. But I ran my own numbers and it's pretty good, but then we're using more like 14kw a day

You might find you change your usage simply because there is "free" power, I'm looking at converting the HWS from gas to electric (stove is the only gas thing left after that) and getting an electric car for that reason, just use them to soak down any extra juice. But if you're happy with things then it doesn't really make sense for you.

        • You certainly do change your habits. I also changed my hot water from an old radiator to a new heat pump hot water service.

  • My power consumption is quite low at 3kWh per day only.

I honestly don't know how that's possible. We burn more than that through the middle of the day when no one's home, typically running at around ~600 watts on "background" usage.

    • i burn through 2.5kw 12am-7:30

And thats just my standby power and kettle lol!

    • Basic house with no AC, pool, or other high drain appliances. HWS is on controlled load (offpeak) and I often switch it off at the meter box. At night I usually run 1 Led light and a small laptop. My kettle probably uses the most power but I love my coffee.

  • my power consumption is 10kwh a day and for us the payback will be long time. With 5kWh a day or even 10kWh its not worth getting solar.

I am saving about $1200 per year, $6400 cost to install, probably paid back in 6 years ( or less depending on the electricity )

Stats today( Monday, WFH ): Saved $2.25. Generation 15,3KW, Consumption 15.7, Consumption from our solar: 11.2. Grid supplied power: 4.5
      Stats YDay( Sunday ): Saved 4.55$, Generation 35.9 KW, Consumption 26KW ( A/C/ On ), Consumption from our solar: 18.9, Grid supplied: 7.1, Feed-in 17

P.S. I have a pool and pump is running from 10AM till 3PM

But I would say with 10KWh usage a day, you would have to wait a bit longer to get the system paid back.

  • I got a Solar installed, 18 LG panels ( 25 years warranty ) and Sonny Boy 5Kw inverter installed over 2 years ago. Did cost me $6400, including all discounts.
On a good day with WFH, we use 5Kw ( mostly my Nvidia 3080 ) or when the Kids keep the AC on.

Installer was a bit on the shoddy side. They said they had in house electrician, but actually they didn't. And only Level 1. When I needed Level 2 ( Power board / Switch Board ) they needed to call their "Special electrician" guy, who actually did very good work ( from the looks of it )

The "in house" electrician level 1, did not know what the Measuring little thing was and seriously asked me if I wanted installed.

    • Sounds like a terrible experience

    • Yeah that's a bit dodgy. Glad it went well for you. Hopefully they didn't "cut any corners" with the important stuff.

      • I had a colleague up on the roof, and they had to fix some minor stuff, otherwise it was looking good.

Got a new fuse board, the cables from the road are connected new, and have a third active phase.

But I had to "manage" the project.

  • Got a 6.6kw system from Origin Energy for $4.5k and a 2 year plan with a lock in FIT 22cents/kw. If you feel more comfortable dealing with a larger company, you can consider getting a quote.

    • I didn't know that they sell solar systems. That's a good price considering you are dealing with a big, reputable company.

      • +1

They were very professional and easy to deal with.

A lot of companies sell solar, even Ikea is the business albeit more expensive than most ($6k for a 6.6kw system).

      • They don't, they are just a middleman. IKEA is the same, not sure about warranty issue would Origin or IKEA even bother to handle or push it to the installer.

If you read review for Origin solar installation it's actually not good at all and depending on who the actual installer is. If you haven't already, start from Solarquotes.

        • +1

They are just the middleman, but just like JB Hifi or Harvey Norman they dont actually manufacture the products for sale. They are just a front of the actual companies that make the product. But from ACCC perspective, you deal with whoever sold you the product, not the manufacturer or installer for this purpose. I rather deal with a bigger company which I got confidence will least be around for the next 10 years than a small solar company that could phoenix their way out of any liability.

And "reviews" online are normally skewed towards people who had issues. I had a great experience but I didnt write any reviews on any website. Im not obliged to review, but im happy to recommend.

          • @KaTst3R: Unlike JB Hifi the installers vary from postcode to postcode, you may be dealing with a shit installer or a great one but you can't choose. Now with JB Hifi you buy an Apple product, it's made by Apple not by Samsung. That's why you get loads of bad reviews.

            • @Bigboomboom: I totally understand, they probably have a couple on panel that is a gamble. It is the same with every company, there are good employees or shit employees. It really depends on who is doing the job on the day.

    • May I know..when u got it install, I got a quote now for $5100 at Vic

      • About 1.5 years ago, but do note that NSW and VIC rebate could be different.

  • +2

Got a 5KW installed on 2018 for $4000 past ROI already since early 2022.

Getting the cheaper install meant getting quicker ROI for me and lucky it is all working well

  • +1

Growatt is a good inverter. We had a quote for 6.6kw Solis system for $2800

    • Solar is really cheap in WA. It's too bad that the FIT is pathetically low in your state.
