How to Watch Netflix/Disney+/etc Legally on TV with Pre-Downloaded Content (No Wi-Fi/Mobile) ?

I can't work out how to stream downloaded Netflix/etc content on a phone (Android or iPhone) to a TV without wifi/mobile access.

I've tried casting to Chromecast with a mobile hotspot using a second phone (uses heaps of data even when the movie is pre-downloaded), tried screencasting apps (blocked by streaming services), tried a Lightning to HDMI adapter (didn't work for streaming services) then added a splitter with HDCP stripping (still didn't work).

Is there a small/cheap device you can buy that plugs into a TV and runs Netflix/Disney+/Stan etc, AND allows you to download stuff to watch later?

Or is there a USB/lightning to HDMI gizmo that allows these streaming services to run?

Or some other way?

  • i thought you have to be on the same wifi for chromecast to work?

with a mobile hotspot using a second phone

Sounds like OP used a 2nd phone in hotspot mode more as a router.

@OP Maybe a dedicated router with no internet + chromecast? No longer have netflix to try so hopefully someone else can verify by disconnecting their router from modem.

      • Not a bad idea and I can try that at home - thanks!

I think you need to look up the definition of streaming?

Download and watch without data is a feature on most streaming apps inc Disney. Works on phones and tablets afaik.

Yeah but that's still not streaming in the common/recent interpretation of the word

        • "stream downloaded content" is confusing to you?

          • @morini: Bro you're the one who posted the thread, seems it confuses you

You won't be able to use Chromecast, because the way it works, the content does not transfer from your phone to the Chromecast. Your phone acts as a kind of remote control which tells the Chromecast what you want to watch and where on the internet to find it. Then the Chromecast streams it direct from the internet.

I expect the download feature only works on the mobile/tablet apps.

  • Depending on what Android phone you have, it may have Video out support, using say USB-C to HDMI?

I know the Samsung Galaxy S series prior to USBC, required a special Micro USB cable. Jaycar have one. There is probably a setting in setting that will need changing.

There is also a Digital AV adapter for IOS which is @ $75, that has a HDMI port on it. Just check your device/IOS version is supported.

      ^This or screen mirroring

  • Doubt you'd be able to do what you're after on a software-basis.

You'd be able to 'screen mirror' the phone content onto the big screen. I do this for my RAV4 hybrid - I screen share my Netflix downloaded shows onto a larger screen while waiting for the kids to do their thing.

  • i know with ipads there's a cable you can use to mirror your screen

    • This is the cable unless it's USBC. Normally $75 (as per above), however Amazon have it for $65.

      • OMG. Is there a cheaper version?

There is, and it doesn't work with Netflix, Disney+ etc because of DRM.

Why do it legally? Seems easier to go the illegal way.

    • Shhhh…. ;)

    • Yeah it seems like too much effort. If you can "acquire" the content to a laptop then all you need to do is plug a HDMI cable into the TV and watch :)

    • I'm planning my legal defense in advance

  • not sure of your situation in terms of internet, but if you are trying to watch streaming from a Sim card, just buy a stand alone dongle and then you'll be able to stream as it will be treated as a wi fi router by your tv (google chrome-cast) or apple tv or whatever.

google "optus sim internet dongle" for example to see what I mean. Would also recommend researching felix on ozbaragin you can get unlimited data sim and use that as a wi fi at home in a free trial

    • I can do that but go cheap with mobile plans and don't have enough data to do that. I'd rather pre-download on my home wifi with unlimited internet.

  • Get a cheap android tv box with all the apps for streaming services - then hotspot your phone as the wifi/network
The old Vodafone TV or Telstra TV boxes are just branded Roku and all are simple and great
There is probably something cheaper on ali but don't know what to recommend

    • Or an Apple tv of course if you are Apple people - older models 2nd hand would do - again hotspot phone for internet

I could say get a smart tv as well - but frankly much more expensive
