Amp Alternative to AV Receiver?

My Yamaha Rx-v1085 just died. I was using it to power 4 ceiling speakers in zone 1, 2 ceiling speakers in zone 2 and also link with MusicCast to a MusicCast 20 in another room. It worked great – and I could control it all via home assistant

So now looking at a replacement and wondering if there any better amp options than an av receiver? I need 6 channels for the 2 zones, but don’t need any of the video / hdmi stuff. Just need something that can integrate with Spotify somehow to stream and a way to auto power off when idle.

Otherwise I’ll just grab an rx-v6a

  • You'd be able to do this with two Sonos amps. Mind you the Amp only has two channels but each channel can drive 3 X Sonos (2 X non Sonos ) speakers connected in parallel. You'd get seamless control with HA and the usual voice assistants and of course all streaming services but probably end up being more expensive than getting a receiver.

    • Sonos amp would be a downgrade in audio quality as they are class d.

      • So I own the NAD T778, class D, it's the best av receiver I have owned, it's has a ridiculous amount of power, easy to match speakers with it, and the sound in both stereo and surround sound is phenomenal. My front L&R are powered by the XTZ edge A2-300 class D power amp, the combination works better than any class A/B receiver I have owned (Marantz, Yamaha, Denon)

    • Yeah at that price I’m better off with a receiver

  • You can get a Bluetooth amp / sound cast thingy BUT finding one for six channels may be really difficult.

Personally I’d get the amp; it would sound better too

  • You can go for an multi channel amp but will loose the streaming abilities and integration to home assistant etc. best to stick to a receiver.

    • I can plug an Apple TV as an airplay receiver in for streaming. I have a wall mounted iPad to steam Spotify, etc.

  • I have two ceiling speakers in my alfresco and I have connected them to this amp that I purchased for $80 from FB marketplace, I have this connected to my google home as Bluetooth and works great!!

    • Yep but I’ve got 6 speakers so would need 3 of them and a way to sync the output
