How to Sell JB Hi-Fi / Any E-Gift Card without Being Scammed?

Pretty much the title. Where's the best place to sell them, and any scams to look out for? 🥹

With PayID is it safe enough to get the receipt and then share the codes or do you wait till it has cleared?

  • The most secure way to ensure smooth transaction would be 'cash'… just have to make sure any $50s or $100s are not counterfeit. :p

For PayID, personally, I'd make sure money was in the bank before releasing goods. Receipts are easily forged.

Then of course there's the buyer and what their concerns would be on how not to get scammed…. I certainly wouldn't be buying gift cards from a seller without firstly being able to check the balance etc.

    @brendanm

    Another day on ozbargain
    Another future gift card scandal

    • Now we only have to wait for someone to buy it, then realise there is an issue and make a post about it here, and the circle will be complete.

  • Receipt can be manipulated or they set it to be send at later date.

Better open cba acc for payid because mostly payid from cba doesn’t clear instantly (the only 4 big bank that i know of that do this, it’s even on their website - A payment may be held for up to 24 hours the first time it is directed to a sender’s account. The delay is so fraud security checks can take place. It gives you time to alert us about any unauthorised or suspicious activity on your account. Subsequent payments should be received in under one minute)

but any bank to cba is instant.

    • Do you mean just a regular bank transfer?

No. I mean if you don’t have cba bank account, and planning to accept more payment from strangers via payid, it’s worth it to open one.

Lots of people use cba to send payid when i sell stuff on fb or gumtree, and their excuse if it’s not arrived almost instantly is because the bank fault, which is correct.

Easy, go to JB and use them up. Not really worth the hassle

    • At this point I’m thinking is it better to buy something that can be resold without too much of a loss. It’s a big enough amount that it’s worth the hassle to me 😂

      • +2

        can be resold

can still be scammed especially selling apple products :)

    • This option - what happen if you buy something then return it unopened - they give you another gift card or they allow you to get refunded to any card?

      • Pretty sure gift card if it was originally a gift card purchase

I’ve sold them in person at JB and for cash. I verified the balance on the card in front of them, then walked to my bank and deposited the cash into my account directly. Then handed them the card.

Why not just hand them the card after receiving the cash. The whole depositing the cash before handing the card seems unnecessary. Are you afraid of counterfeit money or you afraid of getting robbed ?

Bank it before the tinfoil hat falls off.

      • Counterfeit money. In my short 29 years of living I’ve been exposed to counterfeit bills twice. Both honest mistakes from the purchasers who were unaware.

I buy and sell expensive watches here and there. Some in excess of $10-15,000 a piece (which btw is still quite insignificant in the expensive watch department but I digress).

In two of those transactions over the years I’ve had counterfeit notes appear and the bank machines have picked them up and rejected them instantaneously.

I’m happy to take $1000 or so in cash and check myself but any more meet me at the bank and put it straight in.

      • As for the getting robbed bit, that also plays a part to a degree. People who are intending on trying to steal a watch from me are a lot less likely to bother meeting up when I tell them to bring cash and meet me at a bank of my choice.

You wait until you see the money in your account. Receipts can be faked.

Although you then have to have a buyer that is willing to send you money without getting the code(s) first.

  • Stay off Scumtree/Fleebay/Marketplace for starters!

OP @FamousKarma - and don't send them the full code / card number! They don't need the PIN to be able to use it.

I had an instance of posting a blank card without even scratching the PIN bite me in the @ss. A scammer ended up using the code in store (without the physical card) and drained $198 off a $200 card.

    Basically learnt two things:
    1. JB Hifi T&Cs say they need physical card to redeem - this is not true;
    2. the PIN is not necessary for redemption.

If you have already posted a picture on gtree of FB market place - check the balance. It may be drained.

    • Oh wow that’s messed up, wonder what the pin is for if they don’t even require it in-store? I thought the physical cards would need to be swiped or something and buyers just had to worry about whether or not it has already been used 😢

      • That's what I thought…

As Muzeeb already pointed out. How many people are doing this that it's a topic every week?

I don't understand buying giftcards if you have nothing planned to buy? And even more confusing it the average amount seems to be over $1000.
The only time I would buy giftcards is hours or maybe a day before I planned to use them to buy something on sale and get that extra 10% off. Otherwise what is the point of having a value in giftcards you can only use at one shop and if you can't you have to sell at a loss or even lose them??
