Best Outdoor Adhesive for Attaching Pest Deterrent Spikes to Top Rail of Colorbond Fence

Hey guys, I have just started adding bird spikes (refer to linked photo) to the top rail of my Colorbond fence panels.

The first two I added were an epic fail. I used double-sided 3M tapes. I watched with my own eyes as this big fat possum (with a small possum on its back) just knocked them over with complete ease.

These spikes are easier to add onto a paling fence as you simply screw them onto the top. For metal fences, a strong outdoor adhesive is recommended.

A first, I thought I would just use some left over liquid nails for my next trial, but then I remembered that stuff is completely messy.

Is there an outdoor / UV rated adhesive that some of you DIY-ers would recommend for this small project?

I was thinking of buying this outdoor use glue for my next Bunnings trip.

If you have a better suggestion, please let me know in the comments.

    3M VHB

    • This is also a great solution. Where do you normally buy them from?

      • Snap! As I only acquire small quantities I usually go with eBay

This is the way. To help OP - where do you source your VHB? For most Australians, if you can't buy it at Bunnings it may as well not exist

I've used Liquid Nails Rapid Cure for the exact same job and the spikes are still holding up fine after 2 years.

    • Thank you so much.

I'm with the big fat possum with a small possum on its back.

      Me too!

    • I call the big one Bitey

      They are a regular duo.

    • I’m also with you and the possums. This is Australia, not NZ, we love our possums don’t we?

  • Why can't you use screws?

    • Exactly. Short tek screws into the fence top rail…job done.

      • The spare short tek screws that the fencers gave me didn't fit into the plastic base.
Only the small wood screws seem to fit.

        • So drill them out or buy smaller screws.

    have you considered this instead?

Possum management starts at about 50s

    = baby

Actually I'm surprised that a possum, and especially a mother carrying a baby, could get up on top of a colorbond fence. Unlike cats, which can jump but can't climb, possums can't jump they can only climb. A colorbond fence doesn't provide anything for claws to get a grip on.

They climb from an almost dead tree from my neighbour's side when they get bored.

      • What’s the problem with the possums?

Smear vicks vaporub under the top rail of the fence. Possums can't stand the smell of vaporub.

Silicone works pretty well for sticking stuff outdoors. I find liquid nails tends to dry out and become a bit brittle after a while so can break off plastics.

    Roof and gutter silicone.
