Can Someone Recommend Me a Smart Globe?

I'm a smart globe newbie. Not interested in a full suite of smart devices or anything complicated.

Basically, I would like to buy a single smart globe to replace the LED light in the lounge room.

I want the globe to be able to utilise a timer function to turn on and off at set times/randomly and not require a persistent wifi or internet connection.

If I can control the globe through bluetooth on my phone that would be even better.

This would be a big upgrade over manually setting up and using analog timers to control the on/off functions of a dedicated table lamp.

Don't need colour changing modes, but if it has that feature then that's a nice bonus as you can set the ambience/colour temperature of the room which looks pretty neat.

If someone can recommend any brands or products that would be much appreciated.

    Cheap - Kogan
Quality - LIFX or Phillips Hue (personally prefer hue for being zigbee, and quick response, LIFX good if looking for more brighter colors, but being WIFI takes some lag after switching plug on)

You really cannot go wrong with either LIFX or HUE (may be price wise sure, but they are quality ones, latest hue ones are Bluetooth too so no hub required for them)

If you dont know much about it, just get something like this https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/1073923091…

Or sometimes RGB once goes on half price sale in woolies and coles.

Smart lights better if you can integrate with a sensor.

LIFX is good. That said, I recently purchased an Arlec smart LED globe. I think it cost me approximately $12 at Bunnings. For the cost, it is excellent. Using the Grid Connect app, you can change colours between warm white and cool white with the ability to dim the light. I haven’t done this yet, but it also integrates with Google Home and Alexa.

LIFX is the king of bulbs.

I've tried a few but have all LIFX now. Consider them the best. Just wish they were Zigbee.

    Lifx - no hub needed.

  • How do you randomise on/off?

    • For instance, if you are going away on holidays, you can set up the light to turn on and off at random intervals so that it appears someone is inside the house.

      • I understand the use case, wanted to know how to do it.

        • Through the app.

          • @Windows7forever: I have some Xiaomi, Mirabella and Lenovo bulbs and haven't noticed that feature, so maybe don't get those. 🤷😔

Edit: Found it in the Genio app, not the Yeelight app!

    • Hook into Home Assistance, you can randomised it for time of the day, duration and when you away.

  • That's great. With the wifi globes will they typically save the user programmed settings in their memory and work normally once set up?
I don't always have an internet connection here in the home but it's not a problem if I can set up the timer function and operate it is a basic light.

technically other zigbee and bluetooth based devices can do that too. you just need to go to app and program it in settings (hue has best app IMO, although you can also use amazon routines or tuya app)

  • For one light, no hub is ok, but if you expand to more lights, you can flood your wifi network with numerous connections,. With a hub, the light connects to it and the hub to the wifi, so there is only one connection..

With the no hub needed wifi lights, I find that if you still use the wall switch rather than saying 'hey google turn on the light', the non hub versions can go into setup mode and the light flashes. Philips Hue do not.

    • If I decide to expand in the future I can purchase the hub. I think it's the same with wifi cameras. My friend bought a camera which worked fine over wifi but when she added more cameras she needed to purchase a hub to get them connected.

I'll keep that in mind as I prefer using the wall switch. Not a fan of talking to my electronics LOL.

  • When you inevitably progress to consumer-level home automation, which tribe will you join: Apple Homekit, Google Home or Amazon Alexa?

    • Undecided

      • Suggest you choose a light that works with all three
