Why The Dashcam Isn't a Built-in Car Feature?

I'm unlucky as experienced a couple of accidents. The dashcam saved me a lot of time so I wonder why it's still not a standard car feature.

This, the amount of bad drivers is insane, I can't believe how bad people are at driving, that or they just don't care. I've only avoided the majority of accidents by being hyper vigilant myself and slamming on the brakes as soon as possible.

  • You just don’t own the right car lol

  • at this point I be ok with build in USB port around the mirror

So in Germany, it’s not really acceptable, maybe not legal, to have a dashcam. This is due to privacy laws.

This will pretty much rule out Mercedes, BMW, Audi and VW spending time to implement them.

    • this is like saying in Germany it's right hand drive so they won't manufacture left hand drive

global car manufactures do sell modified versions of their automobiles in different countries to adhire to the laws in the target countries.

      • Definitely! That’s so they can sell them in other countries and make money. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t be able to sell them here.

They aren’t going to lose money not implementing dash cams.

    • Do they not have rear view cams either? Doubt it. I've driven Audi in Switzerland, and it had a rear view cam.

  • Saving on product recalls.

  • Interested to know what are the memory card capacities on some of the integrated models, my Navman is maxed out with 128GB and only records 1 days worth.
It helped me immensely last year when I got rear ended.

This is hardcore modern entitlement thinking.
This is how bad society has decayed.

If you want insurance, you pay for it. Simple.

  • Why don't junkies steal dash cams

    Why no solar powered cam

  • +1

They probably will be in 10 years time.

Think back to the early 2000's when Sat Nav was a little external 3" screen with a 12V plugin. Now it's pretty much standard on most vehicles.

    • 10 years?? We've had rear view cams in pretty much all cars for the last… 15 years?! What's so different to a front facing one? The memory card? Dime a dozen!

      • +1

Subaru foresters (and plenty of other cars) already have a front facing camera built into the grille.

  • making cars safer with seat belts, abs, safety bags..etc for less accidents is the priority. not the other way around as you suggest.

if car manufactures need to add dash cams, their brand safety will be in question. it also won't look good for the brand.

perhaps you should invest in defensive driving courses instead of dashcams. buying dashcams is like you're asking for more accidents. lol.

the motto of this story is, prevention is better than a cure.

  • if it was a feature in my car, it would record to a tape or HDD with a potato camera lol

  • I wouldn't want it to me standard/mandatory as it could incriminate me

  • 100% agree, it would be so easy to add to the rear view mirror.

  • Obviously if everyone was a safe driver there would be less crashes so less sales of parts to fix their cars . Thats less revenue for.the manufacturer

  • Wait for it :)

We're heading towards a value added services economy (subscriptions). So most likely when more and more cars have this, it will attract a monthly fee to have all the bells and whistles available for the integrated system. At that point you would consider having your own system without any monthly fees than using the system the car comes with.

  • Adding the camera is probably easy. The troubles probably come with building reliable software that can actually manage the camera and storage reliably, seeing as most care infotainment software looks like it's ripped straight out of 2007.

I would really like at least an option to use the reversing camera as a rear dash cam, seeing as those are already built into most cars and are in prime position for recording the plate of any car that's about to run into you.

  • +1

ive often thought this myself, with all the new cars nowadays having camera's around the car, you'd think it would be a standard feature built into the mirror area.

It seems odd to me that no cars come with a built in dashcam.

  • Because not every single thing, every micro second of the day needs to be recorded and documented. People like to enjoy their trip to the shops instead of worrying about if someones going to hit them and thinking every little thing is always someone else's fault.

  • Just look at rain sensors, standard on bmw, merc and alfas in 2000
Now standard in some mid level cars.

  • around 2018 I nearly bought a used 2006 Lexus ES300 - it was the quietest car I'd ever driven and I thought I'd died and gone to heaven - but when I checked the specs - the GPS system came on a DVD - it was out-of-date, and each update via DVD cost $200

as an ex-computer guy I'll suggest that dashcams of a quality that can capture other car numberplates from a moving image (dunno about night) at an affordable price point for most consumers is a relatively new technology.

I suspect even in the last couple of years I read people saying 'yeah but you won't be able to read the numberplate of the other car'

so yeah - if you were born yesterday, you could think 'why aren't all cars like the latest expensive ones' - d'Oh !

reminds me of stories of Chinese tourists coming to Australia and saying Sydney Town Hall (underground) train station is so old compared to their nice new ones - I'd ask how long they've had it - Shanghai's first section opened in 1993 - Sydney's opened in 1932.

  • Fyi, a dashcam can be used against you too.

Also, you don't get reduced premiums

  • Because if you included every desirable feature someone might want cars would weigh as much as a bus or tank and use 2L of fuel per km.

    • +1

Pretty much all new cars have cameras already though, we just need the ability to add a MicroSD card somewhere and the on-board computer can save the footage there.

Anyone who has more than one crash is either unlucky or shouldnt be driving…

Maybe you should put a 10tonne granite block on the bonnet, that would prevent you from ever having a crash ever again.. primarily because you wouldnt be driving…

    • +2

Five not at faults in my old car alone in seven years. Maybe people should stop being distracted and maintain their cars and pay attention to road signs and markings?

      • -3

Part of the blame is the shear number of cars on the road. More cars mean more traffic means more time wasted. People then do dumb things like look at phones because they are late. Everyone on the road is contributing to this massive waste of time and the accidents that follow.

So yes you are to blame, you are obviously driving too much which doesnt help.

Im not saying you are actively causing the accidents but you are making the traffic that much more on the roads. More traffic more dumb people more crashes.

Speaking of clueless people showing up and causing unnecessary traffic, thanks for contributing to the discussion.

@CrowReally: The only answer is LESS not MORE .

Building MORE roads and commuting/travel/transporting MORE on roads/trains doesnt scale.

Feel free to share three cities of over 1 million people that has solved the commuter/travel problem by building transport solutions of any kind be they car/boat/train/ferry etc.

There are ZERO , because this problem is not possible to solve by INCREASING more movement.

PLease show us how SMART you are and show me an answer, not a fake pie in the SKY a real life example we can look at TODAY.

            • @CowFrogHorse: I don't know what to say to someone as inward-looking and shortsighted as you are.

You talk about how half the world's retail shops don't need to be there because 'everyone shops online', and everyone's driving too much and the roads are too full and all that. (Telling someone they're obviously driving "too much" is easily going to be the stupidest thing I'll read this week, by the way, cheers).

The population of the world is increasing and more people means more of everything.

You're wrong about basically every observation you've made about the world, and you're digging your heels in about things you can't change.

It's a nice way to make yourself feel futile and helpless, but I figure you probably have enough of that going on naturally anyway, yeah?

              • @CrowReally: After the three train commuter disasters last week….and the traffic on the roads, are you really going to tell me that this is getting better as time goes on ?

How many times does one need to have these events happening before one realises that driving/commuting everywhere like this is simply not working and there has to be another way ?

  • Everyone pointing out that the Tesla has it installed as standard. Truth is Elon Musk knows Tesla being an electric vehicle and all, would attract a lot of angry petrol heads and instances of road rage or malicious damage in car parks/charging bays just because some people religiously oppose electric vehicles and can't stand the sight of one. Hence why not only did Tesla include a pair of dash cameras (front and back) but practically everywhere on the car, giving it pretty much a 360 degree view.

    • -2

Typical religious nut that cant see the truth of the statements they make.

EV cars are not solving ANY TRAVEL or ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM, they are simply creating MORE.

The world is not infinite, encouraging people to drive the same or MORE does not scale. There is only so much cars on the roads you can put because it becomes a big pile of stinking poo. EV cars cost a lot of pollution, the metal and batteries dont grow on trees. More than half the OIL cost of an ICE car is not the driving its the MANUFACTURING. Roads are also a significant cost of CARBON, building and repairing roads, tunnels because of more cars, costs CARBON. Concrete gives off carbon as it settles.

Secondly where are the EV car batteries going to go. Dont tell me recycling, ASK TESLA yourself for a recycling program anybody can get their battery recycled today. Also dont tell me someone will recycle them becaquse they are valuable….batteries are always changing, today lithium is valuable in a few years there will be something else, just likie NIMH, NICD etc are basically old technology.

Pretending that EV cars makes carbon and environmental pollution a non problem is intellectually dishonest.

But hey when you try and answer share links to REAL SOLUTIONS not startups promising the world and deliverying nothing.
