VPN Router to Go with TP-Link Deco M5

Currently I have FTTP plugged into the deco M5. Then a switch out to the rest of the house and other decos. The m5 is providing a mesh over my townhouse using three devices.

Just bought the nord VPN deal.

The m5 cannot support VPN and cannot support lots of other stuff, like dns server on the guest network. I use pihole so because it lives on my Nas then I cannot use a guest network anymore.

I can't use nord on individual devices because it cannot use the PI hole. So I can't use local dns.

So I wonder if there is a recommended device I can put between the deco and the FTTP NTD. It would be responsible for running the VPN, and a guest wifi network. But the deco needs to do the network for the home devices.

I'm not sure if this is possible, since the pihole would be on the internal network. I once used the Telstra gen2 modem in front of the deco but I had problems with accessing the nas or something, I can't remember.

another reason I need to use pihole is so that I can access the services inside my NAS with a domain name. Without it because of the Deco I would need an IP address while inside the lan and then a domain name while outside. I guess it's deco's problem as well. Other routers can translate names to internal IP I heard.

  • Do you need a VPN for the whole network?

I have my home network and then grabbed a glinet router and chucked Nord on that and then connect devices to that when I need a VPNā€¦

    • I'm not sure. I got the VPN and glinet mango for travel later. But since I have it, I thought easier to have for the whole network than trying to install apps everywhere.
I don't have any special needs for a VPN otherwise, but figured better to have privacy than not?

      • So let me get this right… you are going to pay another company for privacy? Do you know where they are based? How do you know if they are audited that they won't hand out your details and the dodgy stuff you are doing. Just be vigilant with passwords. Don't save them on websites etc.

Chances are you don't need a commercial VPN. It creates more hassle than it's worth in my opinion. If you have any servers you can't access it remotely.

I'm not anti VPNs, they have their place. But not for privacy like you've mentioned. All you doing is giving the information to a company that you have no control over what they do with it. Use it for torrenting or protection from DDosing.

I use mine for gaming so people can't track my home IP address.

But I think in your use case… I really thing the Gl.iNet router is the way to go. Have 2 wifi signals. One that is VPN and one as your home network.

It's more if you use public wifi where you need to be really concerned about being hacked…. That's where you use a vpn… or in my case I run a vpn server and my mobile/laptop goes via my home network as opposed to mr blogs dodgy free wifi…

        • So in public if I use my mobile data I'm also fine, don't need a vpn?
I want to set up for torrenting but the nas, if I install the vpn it stuffs up all other services on it so maybe not possible.

          • @furyou: You could use the Mango as a Wireguard server… set up clients for your phone and laptop if you wanted. Up to you on the 4G VPN part… it's really up to you. Just think Public Wifi you need a VPN!

I use my wireguard server so I can access my home network and torrent box on my iPhone.

Use the guest wifi for devices that you want to not have access to your main network.

Grab a Slate AX and use Public VPN on that and when devices need VPN etc.

  • Asus routers support 5 or more (depending). I use 3, 1 for NAS , 1 for smart home ; 1 for tv.
I use the app for PC and phones
