Fetch Mini $49 Delivered @ Optus Smart Spaces

93

You need to sign in to an Optus account or make a free account to purchase. I know most people would prefer to buy chromecast with google tv but this is handy for those who want FTA. Happy viewing!

Just FYI max display output is 1080p

    • Yeah 1080p they are not good and as a bargain anymore.

Are these "locked" to Optus? There are a lot of Fetch devices on ebay that are locked to Optus' network, which makes them a lot less useful.

I know Fetch used to sell retail Fetch Minis for $49 unlocked, but are sold out, as these are discontinued in favour of the 4k Fetch Mini.

Also FYI, the Fetch Mini only has 1 FTA tuner, and can't record. It can play back recordings made by the Fetch Mighty, but Fetch specifically say that you can't mix ISP versions and retail versions on the same account.

The wording looks like fetch retail. Activation directly through fetch

    • But you can link it to a mighty.. which is why having one at this price is not a bad thing if you already have a mighty. You can then watch all your recordings on the mini

      • and share your FTA channels which is useful if you don't have a connection for another room.

        • I got it to share recordings betwen the two boxes. It is also better than my TV tuner on the 2nd tv. For $49 its a no brainer if you have a mighty (I got the $99 one a few months ago)

These are atrociously slow, I binned mine

    • Yep I somehow rode the free optus wave for about 5 years on it. Get the 4k model or the mighty.

    Dont bother, save your $49.
The software "updates" over last few years have rendered mine unusably slow.
Its just landfill at this point in time.
Forced obsolescence maybe, or could just be incompetent software devs not testing their "updates" thoroughly on aging hardware before release..

    • Just like an old phone, there's only so much performance you can squeeze out of an old processor and insufficient memory. The Fetch Minis have gone well past their use by date. The Mightys are fine though.

      • Sure, i get it, old hardware + new "updates" (which most of the time dont add any signficant difference anyways) = slower performance.
Which is why i turn off updates to a lot of devices I own.
However in the case of this POS, cant even do that, there is no option to turn it off and the "updates" are forced and have rendered the device essentially unusable..
Which is why i think its forced obsolesence. Have a look at productreview page for this model Mini.

The hours my poor Dad wasted on the phone with Optus trying to get his Fetch Box to work properly. Do yourself a favour and avoid these paperweights

    • Or at least buy a retail box. If you switch ISP it’s unusable, it can’t be changed to another ISP is retail. What a joke

    • Its easy. Just do not set up these ones with the in box instructions. Link it straight with your fetch acct. Set up was like 4 minutes plus updates.

    • that's more a standard dealing with optus problem than a fetch problem! Do yourself a favour and avoid Optus?

Underpowered processor. When mine failed just after the warranty, FetchTV said tough luck, buy another one. I have since moved to Firestick.

  • I read optus as potus

Need ro get my hands on a Fetch mighty!

  • What is the alternative to Fetch Box which allows you recording FTA? (Genuine Question)

FYI - I am not store rep

    • It's hard to find something in this price range, but reckon this could work.

      https://www.amazon.com.au/1080p-Digital-Set-Top-Recording/dp…

    • I've always used Beyonwiz boxes (currently using a U4), but not sure if they're made any longer.
I always liked them because you could skip a certain time (eg 3 mins) rather than having to fast forward/rewind. Much better for skipping full ad breaks on FTA.
Plus, the Beyonwiz boxes allowed you to download recordings off the box, which many mainstream recorders wouldn't allow due to having FreeTV or FreeView certification.

    • allows you recording FTA?

Set-top boxes are now getting hard to buy, and many have limited features (like no front-panel display).

If you have an old PC or Raspberry Pi that is unused, you can buy a TV tuner card or USB TV receiver, and try out one of the Linux distributions that is specifically for turning your computer into a FTA receiver. You can use your smartphone as the remote, and watch TV (live or recorded) on your phone as well as on the TV connected to the computer.

It has been ten years since I did this myself, Google "Linux HTPC" to find the current distributions.

A friend of mine had a PC set up with multiple tuners, and simultaneously recorded all of the FTA channels in Brisbane to HDD, keeping about three days of recorded programs on a rolling basis, so if somebody said "Did you watch this movie last night?", he could pull up the recording and watch it, or mark it as "not to be auto-deleted".

He also had configured remote access over the internet, so could watch the recordings during lunch break at work.

Do try to get a low-power computer if you want to do this, an old PC that uses 150W of power costs about a dollar a day to run. The savings from using a 20W computer instead, could pay for the 20W computer! Plenty of cheap low-power refurbished options are available.

  • OP you should clearly state in your description or title if this is LOCKED to Optus, from what I'm aware all the ISP devices are locked. FWIW refurbished were selling on eBay for $50 before, keep an eye out as they fix up and resell bricks like mine 😂😭

Optus no longer offers locked Fetch TV boxes anymore.

These boxes are retail boxes (as seen in the photos with no Optus logo on the boxes, and in the description detailing instructions on how to activate and subscribe directly on Fetch's website).

  • Just wait for $99 Fetch mighty deals at Fetch, got mine fore $99 and it works well. I even watch Prime, 10play, 9now, Youtube etc.

  • Interesting…Optus still selling Fetch products when it's owned by Telstra now

Just sharing here if useful to someone - i ordered to go with my existing fetch mighty+fetch mini to share FTA and recordings to a room without an antenna. The box delivered is the Optus branded one, but it includes a letter instructing you to ignore the optus instructions and register through fetch directly as per the sale page. It added to my account no issues - guessing these are optus ones they are selling off as retail and are not locking to optus network in any way. I was annoyed when i first opened the box and saw 'Optus' on it.
