Best Monitor for Graphic Design/Video Work

Hi everyone,
My work has asked me to give them a list of possibilities for a new monitor for my graphic design/video work. It's such a minefield that I don't really know where to start! I'll be running it from a MacBook Pro.

My ultimate preference is the Apple Studio Display because I'm firmly entrenched in the Apple ecosystem and that one suits my needs perfectly, however it is quite expensive and I'm not sure if my work will go for it.

I've also shortlisted the LG 38WN95C.

What are the next best monitors taking into account resolution (preferably 5K but 4K would suit I guess) and brightness? The Studio Display is 600nits, so something close to that would be great.

Looking ideally for something over 27".

Thank you!

  • Would imagine DCI-P3 coverage is important to you.

    • LG Ultrafine 5K IPS Monitor
    • MSI Prestige PS341WU
    • Alienware 34 QD-OLED
    • Samsung Smart Monitor M8
  • If clients will see the monitor then the Apple display can serve the purpose of impressing them. Think of it as not just a monitor but a bit of impressive art that you'd expect to see in the best studios in the world.

  • +1

Given you're wanting to use for graphic design, I suggest taking display scaling into consideration. For the average user it's not something that's really noticeable, but when you're dealing with precise pixel measurements, the scaling anti-aliasing can be a nuisance at best.

  • If you're intending to pitch a rationally-priced option to your employer: LG 32UN500-W 32 inch $450

  • Assuming you edit 4k video, it's nice to have a resolution high enough to be able to see the 100% scaled video + the interface of your video editing program, some displays that fit the bill:

    Dell Ultrasharp UP3218K
    LG UltraFine 27MD5KL

The Dell costs more than some of the Apple ones, though, and I'd probably go for Apple if money wasn't an issue. The LG is a lot cheaper though.

If the native 4K video editing thing isn't a big deal to you, there are a lot more options at 4K (monitor) resolutions. There are a few professionally-oriented OLED displays (e.g., Asus ProArt PA32DC, LG UltraFine 32EP950-B) which offer good colour space coverage and the infinite contrast of OLEDs, but the price is steep.

Just curious what your rationale is for shortlisting the LG 38WN95C? It is a gaming monitor, so a fair amount of the manufacturing cost (and price) is spent on things like the high refresh rate, which won't be of good use to you, and it has just average uniformity etc.
