Kids Riding Electric Scooters at Night with No Helmet

Being really loud, going into people's front yards (playing, not on their scooters), riding their scooters in the middle of the road at night without helmets in the neighbourhood but the street isn't busy.

Their parents don't care, I would at least make sure my kids had helmets on.

Should I do anything or let them be?

Let natural selection run its course.

      Darwin Award nominees?

    • OP’s profile pic may want to accelerate that.

  • replace "electric scooters" … with … "bicycles" … and are yeah, this has been happening since the 70's/80's.
Wave your OzB flag at those hooligan kids all you want - but sadly, it won't change much (if at all).

If you want to really get on your soapbox … you have already tried speaking to their parents.
    Haven't you ?!? !!!

Other ways too (passive/aggressive) - but first/foremost speak to parents first.
This is also coming from someone, who was young once - but these days starting to feel my age.

With the assistance of a friend pretend you are carrying a large sheet of glass down the street.

They will stop and stare in amazement giving you a momentary break from their shenanigans.

With the assistance of a friend pretend you are holding a rope across the road.

      • 80's gags are timeless.

A mate and I use to hold a hair dryer towards the traffic while on our push bikes on a local busy road. Watching all the traffic slow down was hilarious. Probably get charged for impersonating highway patrol these days.

    Okay, Boomer.

  • What exactly are you doing to do?

Kids need to be kids, have fun and even (shock horror) be reckless.

It's part of growing up and is way too suppressed these days.

I'd leave a letter for the neighbours. Some are very quick to make assumptions and laugh at people on oxb but if you or anyone else hit a child on a scooter or bike that isn't wearing a helmet, then the consequence of taking a life and having to live with that, will be on the driver and the parents too. If they ignore it (and dependant on whether you're in an area where the local police actually answer the phone or not), I'd call the local police and ask them to have a chat with them. Kids die and there's no reason why a child with a scooter or bike wouldn't have access to a helmet.

    • And this one too which shows why you should wear kevlar trousers and jackets:

I can't find the video they showed us when I was learning to ride a motorbike that showed what happened when a leg of lamb wrapped in a leather jacket was held to a spinning grind stone - nothing - and then without the jacket - flesh flying everywhere.
