Need Help Looking for a 7 Seater SUV

Hi all fellow OzBargainers,

We are living in Sydney and currently looking for a 7 seater SUV for our growing family. I don’t have much experience in automotive field, so I would like to ask which make/model would you guys recommend for:

  • Used/Demo car
  • Budget is under $30,000
  • Under 60,000 km odo

Lastly, would you recommend buying from private seller or car dealer? If from car dealer, what method do you use to bargain with them?

For example, how much % discount on sticker price as a general rule, or some useful tips would be appreciated.

Thank you all!

I'm guessing you have 4 in your family.

Look around on carsales to get some ideas. Can search by number of seats. Once you’ve picked a couple, go sit in them and narrow it down for us a bit. Come back with a shortlist of 4 or less vehicles otherwise your results are going to be pretty meaningless. Check with friends and family on their recommendations, they know you bette than us.

An SUV under $30k with less than 60k km is likely to be quite small. Keep in mind that if you are using 3 rows of seats you are unlikely to have very much luggage room. Maybe a people mover/van would be a better option. You haven’t outlined a usage case.

Discount on sticker price? You’re new here aren’t you? Not a great time for getting a bargain in the car market. It’s still recovering from covid supply issues, prices are up due to demand. However, we are now getting into higher internet rates so it may help.

Under $30k and under 60k km? Christ, a tall ask in this over inflated market. I think all you are going to get in that range is something like an Outlander or X-Trail, and even then, saying these vehicles are "7 seaters" is stretching the truth a little bit…

    • there are over 600 cars within this criteria on Carsales

Most likely all shitboxes, and not actual 7 seaters.

        Only 600~ish??

Well, you can discount all the ones for $2000 or that are utter shitboxes
You can discount all the ones that are not 7 seaters but are some how listed as 7 seaters
You can discount all the ones that are known issues/unreliable/expensive to repair/maintain (Craptiva and Elgrands for a start)
You can discount all the ones that have "280km" when what they mean is 280,000km
You can discount all the ones that are on the opposite side of the country or 2 states worth of driving away (OP is in Sydney)
You can discount all the ones that are listed as SUV but are actually wagons, vans or hatchbacks
You can discount all the ones that are 10+ years old…

So… again, once we remove all the shit from your list of 600~ish… just how many cars are there again?

I entered in and narrowed down the search criteria on carsales and came up with a list of 31 cars… Of which almost 50% of those are either a Craptiva, people mover type vans, Japanese grey market import or euro-shit boxes.

So, with a realistic list, it's about 20 cars and of those 20, they are all basically Outlanders and X-Trails…

    Why SUV?

Just get a Kia Carnival if you need space for 7. Won't be one of the cool kids at school but you have a functional car for a growing family.

    • Have a Honda Odyssey, kids love it

    • +1, more practical for continuing 7 seat usage, more luggage space, better packaging as it’s a proper 7 seater, just a winner all around.

  • Good luck is the short answer.

The thing to be flexible on if your list is the odometer reading. When you’re buying a used car you’re buying the seller. Id rather buy a 160k km car whose owner can tell me everything that’s been done to it, the life it’s had, and mechanical sympathy, than a 60k km car whose owner knows nothing about any of those.

As above, your options are mostly small vehicles. There’s the captiva which is small. If you’ve got kids in the last row say good bye to luggage space and they will also have bugger all legroom. There’s also some elgrands at that price which whilst uglier are a much more practical. Pushing closer to $30k you can get some pathfinders

If you can accept up to 80K there are plenty of sound-looking options (e.g. Mazda CX-9) - and if you don't have a steep driveway perhaps consider a people-mover, like this:

    • that's a good option also

    • +1 CX9. Reasonable access to the back two seats, OK through teen years.

    go to Carsales
    filter search
    <$33000
    < 70,000km
    7 seats
I set these parameters can you have more wriggle room in the search

    https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/?q=(And.Price.range(..33000)..Odometer.range(..70000)..Seats.range(7..).)

There are 642 cars in Australia

But if I had 7 people to move around and on low budget I would go for this.. 2012 Toyota Estima Aeras Auto. $22K
Toyota reliability, low kms. With 5 kids (I'm assuming) you don't have time for breakdowns and visits to mechanics.

    • There is about 30~ish cars… once you get rid of all the bad data
