Quiet Laptop - Options (Budget $1,000)

My laptop sometimes sounds like it's taking off from a launchpad - MSI with an older gaming GPU. I really only do browsing and word processing though I do like playing around with Linux for a bit of flexibility.

Considering a M1 MacBook Air - 512g HDD and then dual boot it so I've got 2 256g systems - one being Asahi Linux.

I figure I could do this for just under $1k.

Is there a better alternative anyone has worked out?

  • toshiba z20t
old but okay for general use

and you can always remote desktop to a faster computer for heavy processing

    • bah, scrapping the mac idea… Asahi linux is far from fully baked. its more like a bit of linux on the side.

      • you could use the cheap second hand ultra quiet laptop for simple day to day things on windows, and then remote desktop to your older noisy computer that's sitting in another room where the noise doesnt bother you.

Splurged for a Macbook Air M1.
Looks good, makes no noise, makes 1 ext monitor look ugly, refuses a 2nd and after 30 years on mainstream is feeling clumsy

    • i dont quite get your comments. so your saying good screen, no second screen and difficult os?

      • gone back to an i5, old but drives 2 vert monitors and quiet enough!
