Cheapest way to transport a couch

Hi all,

I'm looking at buying a 2 - 3 seater couch with a chaise from eBay (not stupid enough to pay over inflated retail prices) but I've only got a small 4 door hatchback. I do have a mate that can help me physically move the thing, so that'll save any labor.

I'm thinking of hiring a small moving truck or something to that extent but does anyone have a better suggestion?

Thank you in advance! :)

  • If you have access to a vehicle with tow bar, maybe rent a trailer from your local servo? The last time I did this (about a decade ago), it was around $15 for 1/2 day.

  • Bunnings let's you use a trailer for a few hours. Why not buy a bagged-load of cow manure for the garden prior to couch pickup?

Gumtree - plenty of guys with vans looking to make an extra buck

  • I'm with Pauly if you have a towbar; but failing that, can't you still rent utes from various servos by the hour as well? It's been a long time since I've done this though, so I'm not sure if you still can?

  • a true ozbargainer would strap it to the roof - rope through the windows and back around :)

  • Renting a ute or a trailer is a bad idea, the guys recommending this havent done it in a while (years), no offense guys. Things have changed its much more expensive and you actually have to make an extra trip to garages to pick up drop it off. There's a deposit and sometimes fuel to pay

A smart oz bargainer would use ebay to find delivery, i bought a couch off ebay and had it picked up and delivered for $50.00 i didnt have to do anything :)

Heres a start , just refine your area and budget

I had to pickup a couple of items things recently - a 2 seater couch and a mattress.

To collect, I hired a Ute for 2 hours from my local Bunnings. It cost me $35 to hire for this period of time, and then I put about $5 of fuel in, so it was pretty reasonable (even more so because I had 2 things to collect from 2 different places.

    • Thanks for the info perez, I didn't realise Bunnings did that…I'm filing that one away for future use! :)

  • Finally picked up a couch today using your method perez. Bunnings had $25 for 1 hour or $35 for 2 hours OR a free trailer if you have a car with a toe bar. They charged $0.36 per Km and I had to fill up fuel. For my 2 hour hire, all up it was under $50. Thank you heaps everyone for the tips. :D
