An all-new, complete 35th anniversary hardcover box set of one of the most acclaimed and influential comics of all time, with the original Japanese art and right-to-left reading format for the first time! The science fiction epic that changed anime and manga forever is presented in six beautiful hardcover volumes, plus the hardcover Akira Club art book and an exclusive patch with the iconic pill design.

In 1982, Kodansha published the first chapter of Akira, a dystopian saga set in Neo-Tokyo, a city recovering from thermonuclear attack where the streets have been ceded to motorcycle gangs and the rich and powerful run dangerous experiments on destructive, supernatural powers that they cannot control. In 1988, the manga was adapted into what was at the time the most expensive animated film ever made, which brought Akira's influence out of the manga world and onto the global stage. Today, it remains a touchstone for artists, writers, filmmakers, and fans, retaining all the brutal impact and narrative intensity it had when Otomo first unleashed it onto the world.

Just finished reading this recently… It's awesome!

Me too, literally a week ago. It was much better than I expected - the pace was unrelenting! Most page-turning thing I've ever read.

I saw the anime years ago and didn't get what all the fuss was about. I re-watched the anime a few days ago and the manga absolutely blows the anime out of the water. If you're a fan of the anime then you MUST read the manga at some point in your life.

The anime kind of doesn't make sense because it's the whole manga condensed into one movie, hopefully we eventually get it as a series or multiple movies.

  • Amazing boxed set. Fyi unleashstore used to sell this for 165, but they've got an expired SSL certificate on their website and have started selling through Amazon so not sure what's going on there. They had Battle Angel Alita too - also good but no Akira.

  • I'd like to get a hold of the colourised version. I didn't necessarily enjoy it more in the original black and white. I bought it second hand in the 2000s when eBay was in it's heyday, one purchase was books 2-5 in B&W, and a colourised book 1 from someone in the UK with a full collection. I also bought Domu from a local online bookstore, it was worth the read.
