Perth - groceries, fruit and vegetables

Hello all,

I finally took the plunge and moved to Perth for work. I'm living in the city because that's close to our office and we travel around to the north and south.

I moved this week and I'm shocked at the price of groceries and fresh fruit. I know I am living in Perth city and most of my shopping has been done at the two CBD Woolworths', but I'm happy to travel to surrounding suburbs to source cheap food. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I miss my weekly Coles and Woolworths specials!

Thanks!
J

  • You can try Subiaco weekend market (open on friday-sunday) http://www.subiacomarkets.com/ near Subi Woolworths. They sell fruits and vegies cheap. There is also a Morley Coventry Square Markets http://www.coventrysquare.com.au/ which is open daily.

  • I have found that the cheapest fruit & Veg in a shop environment (ie where you do not have to shop only during the market times and days), is at Jacks at Claremont Quarter. Cheaper by far than Jacks in Subi. Claremont Quarter have free underground parking for 2 or 3 hours.

The prices in Perth suck big time. We are completely screwed and it is not because of "distance".

You will not, most likely, find cheaper prices at coles and woolies in the suburbs.

There is a market in East Perth called City Farm - not to be confused with City Farmers.

God, I love shopping, eating and drinking in Melbourne.

  • Will be moving to perth in november for a graduate position =)
cant wait for the over priced groceries shopping =)
also need a location for cheap rent? i was thinking something along the lines of <200 =)
    thanks in advance

No idea. I own a 9 unit apt building in South Perth with no views. One bedrooms, no views. Good trendy area though. I think they are renting out for $350 a week. Crap fittings, old kitchens, old toilets, crappy showers. Maybe try a share house or some sort. Good luck.

For all the whinging of renters about greedy landlords - piss off. Landlords charge market rent and generally run at a loss. If we charge less than market rent, who should we subsidise? Some stranger who walks into our agents office?

  • Thanks for your help YYY and voteoften. I will check out those places.
