Telstra Upgrade & Protect $15/Month

So Telstra offer the $15/month upgrade and protect plan.

I am thinking of getting s23 ultra 512gb on 36 month plan.

So yearly it is 750 (phone) +180 (U&P) + $99 (early upgrade) = $1029.

Is paying $1029 to telstra every year worth it to have the latest and best samsung phones?

As if I do this then might aswell do it for ever.

I am wondering is borrowing a phone for 1k a year worth it?

P.s. Sim plan not included as ny brother has a telstra sim plan so will just be adding to his account

P.p.s This is not a deal but just an option that Telstra offers, that's why it is on the forum and not a deal.

After carefully thinking about it, it might not be good for Samsung but only for iPhone users as they don't get discounts and so for them if getting like iphone 14pro and they are already planning to upgrade every year then this would be excellent.

But for me after realising the trade in value of the phones, it is not suitable unless i were going to pay $2.2k for it

  • Hiya OP, thanks but do you have weblinks as trying to understand this Telstra deal you've posted

So Telstra offer the $15/month upgrade and protect plan

Honestly never heard of above from Telstra even though I'm with them and didn't think they'd still sell the S22 range last years model

    Cheers

Edit: upgrade plan? I guess one needs a mobile phone to upgrade? Which mobile phone of yours your upgrading may I ask?

PS: paying Telstra $1029 per year over 3 years is certainly not worth it especially for a S22 Ultra, since no 5G plan is included but maybe you don't have the upfront funds, but I'm sure Optus/Vodafone have better online deals over 3 years including 5G plan but even Samsung directly on their website or jbhifi deals are much better deals and that's for a S23 Ultra 👍😊

    • Sorry meant s23 ultra 512gb😅

So bassically it would ve like leasing a phone 1k to lease the phone and return it after to swap ot with the s24 ultra and pay 1k again ans then return the phone to get s25 and so on every year until you believe it's time to stop the uprade plan

This is the link for it
      https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/mobiles-on-a-plan/u…

      • If you for example buy a S23 on a plan its straight yours to do what you want with it, my last deal sold 2x S23 Ultra 1TB phones and kept the 2x Telstra $99 plans, leasing means you renting it and will never own the phone

        • oh interesting.
thought on a plan you also don't own it until you full pay it off? You can still use it however you want but it is never truly your until it is fully paid off
If that's the case then you own it for one year and then give it back if you want to upgrade it

          • @michael9865: Nope Telstra is giving you an interest free loan for your S23 Ultra phone so it's yours straight away, as any type of loan if you break contract early, then you have to pay off the rest of the months in full straight away,.. also the plan that's on contract but I don't think any off Teltras plans are contracts for 12, 24 and 36 months

            And followed your link,..

            What is Upgrade & Protect?
Upgrade & Protect is a $15 per month service that lets you upgrade your device before your contract ends. You must add it when you buy your new device on a repayment contract with an Upfront Mobile or Data plan. It can't be added to an existing service. You can cancel Upgrade & Protect anytime

Seems like the mobile you buy upfront (mind you above deal you also need to go on a Telstra 5G mobile plan and can be data plan also) you'll own the phone outright straight away, it's yours to sell or too keep to take up this $15 upgrade and protect offer, obviously the shorter the plan I.e. being 12 months plan with this $180 per year upgrade and protect is actually not a bad deal as you'll get to upgrade every year so too the next years S24 Ultra, new Ultras certainly drop more then $180 in value but the catch is which one needs to calculate in thus deal is the Telstra plan your forced to have, still I think not a bad deal for $180 more on top per year especially if your always with Telstra anyway and always buying the latest mobiles from Samsung or and other brand

            How does it work?
            Upgrading a device
You can upgrade a device in good working order:

for no fee in the final six months of a 12-month repayment term, or the final 12 months of any other repayment term; or
for $99 any other time before the final period of your repayment term.
You can upgrade a damaged device twice per year for a fee of $249 each time.

            • @Italkdigital: yep so brother has Telstra sim plan,
I will add the phone to his plan on a 36month term to pay around $62 a month comes to about $750 a year.
              U&P is $180 a year.
$99 is deciding to upgrade early.
Total if upgrading is $1029 roughly every year.
Upgrading means you have to send your phone back in and get the new one (S24 ultra). You do not need to pay the rest of the fee ($1450) for the S22 ultra however it also means the new phone you get S24 Ultra start again from $0 so have to pay $2.2k over 36 months again.

I assumed that is what my ad said anyway

              • @michael9865: Your better doing repayments over 24 months then 36 months, yes monthly repayments will be higher but you get option to upgrade your phone every year for free no added costs

for no fee in the final six months of a 12-month repayment term, or the final 12 months of any other repayment term, or
                for $99 any other time

Apart from the $180 per year "upgrade and protect" well if you wait 3x years to upgrade a mobile then technically the "upgrade and protect" will cost you $180 x 3 per new phone upgrade

The upgrade and protect seems like a not bad deal, well I've decided to stick with Telstra cause of the high 5G data speeds which is over 650 MBps at my place, well will consider with the S24 Ultra, a bit of a wait lolz

Edit: if you can do on your brothers Telstra plan then bonus, suggest check out all Telstras deals with the S23 Ultra range, don't think they have a free Samsung Watch like Optus has but I'm sure they have other deals for the S23 Ultra, dear I mention I haggled Telstra for $20 of my jbhifi/Telstra 5G mobile $99 plans by 2x

So you never get to own the phone? I don't think the math works out on this.

    • -1

Yeah rip-off if Telstra is offering that deal though i think your more right lolz

      • It's not really a deal, it's just an option that Telstra offers

    • Yeah you dont own the phone unless you pay the rest so 2.2k. So would still need to pay 1.2k to telstra instead you just upgrade phone every year.

I felt tempted as technically have to pay almost $1.6k to own s23 ultra 512gb when on special like that $800 trade in offer from samsung.

good deal if you want to be poor

The first question you should be asking is, do you really need the latest phone every year? We're not exactly seeing huge improvements on a yearly basis.

I find 3-4 years is the sweet spot for flagship phone upgrades - that's about how long you continue getting OS updates. 5 years if you want to continue while you get security-only updates.

  • $180 per year extra to be able to upgrade to the latest model sounds okay. I mean your phone would drop in value by more than $180 in a year and you wouldn’t be able to execute the upgrade for the same money any other way (like sell on Gumtree and buy the new one). I haven’t read the fine print, but I’m guessing your repayment cycle would get reset too?

    • yep, which is why if you are upgrading every year then it's like paying $1k to use the latest phone every year

Actually have the S23 Ultra 1TB on a plan with Telstra, with Upgrade & Protect. It's not about 'owning' the phone, it's a better insurance policy than relying on Home & Contents to cover it, especially with a minimum of $600 no claim straight up.

Had to replace a Windows Phone on Home & Contents, was the last time I do that ever again. Plus having to wait over six weeks for JB Hifi to give a quote back to my insurance company.

  • Buy phone outright - if you can't then you can't afford the phone. Being in a never-ending contract is for suckers.

    • Yeah i mean i could go out now and buy it for 2.2k cash most of us can if not all.
Felt this was a hassle free way of doing it, if you wanted the newest phone every year

Just remember this also includes an ‘insurance’ like option. Eg break it, pay an excess and you can upgrade.

    • And that's exactly what I was trying to get across above. Still got negged for it though…

      • Having used insurance from telcos previously that was actually insurance eg pay an excess and get a replacement phone of same model, same contract, I decided not to use this upgrade and protect.
I want insurance for a new phone, not pay you to let me upgrade early and they keep the phone, I personally don’t think it’s a good deal.

I’m an iPhone user so I decided to use the apple care insurance option.

I’m all for a new phone but at the prices they are now and how long they last it’s not worth it. My wife and I buy a new phone every 1-2years but that’s shared between us, and we sell the old phone rather than these types of deals.

You get negged for anything here, don’t take it to heart.

Only you can make the financial decision that right for you.
