Hi all,

DigiDirect currently has the price at $2294 which is lower than some of the second hand ones. On top of that, Cashrewards offers 12% off to Sony Australia atm. By doing a price match on the Sony website, the price can go down to $2019.

Awaiting stock, estimate available in 2 weeks.

It’s my first post at this awesome community, hope that can help some of you :)

      Yes

    • Cashrewards have paid out 6 (out of 6) of my price matched transactions in the last 12 months

    • Yes, I tried last Black Friday for other products.

And I am sure it’s irrelevant to the policy you referred above since there is no extra code needed.

  • Hmm that's an amazing price, I know some second hand lenses are going more than that price, why are people selling it though? It's a tempting price

    • Indeed, I was surprised by the price listed at Digidirect.
I guess it would be a good start considering the 50 F/1.4 GM is out, wait for a few months to let the second hand market to adjust the price hahaha

Never bought a second hand considering I would use it for paid work lol I don't really have a use of 50mm 1.2, does not make a business case for me but I am very tempted to try.

I'll try Sony price match, cash back patth. Recent they told me they don't price match dealers which are not authorized. I bet digi is one.

So huge, heavy and expensive. All worth it for the rendered bokeh.

    • +1

Yeah, I also own a Zeiss 551.8, it fits most of my working occasions tbh. Many of my clients couldn't tell the difference between F1.2 and F1.8.

It would be very subjective to say whether it is worth it depending on others' needs and equipment. I guess it is suitable for those who doing commercial photography in a studio?

I use a match of f/1.2, f/1.4 and f/1.8 lens and do find the latter is great when travelling interstate or overseas. For anything local the wider aperture lens is the primary.

Some of it comes down to build quality, some the Bokeh rendition and others the way the image is rendered. An example is the older Canon 85mm f/1.2 lens for EF mount. It produces a unique, softer image quality that compliments portraiture photography. On the other hand, a lens such as the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 renders a vintage, harsher Bokeh look but the build quality is several times better than the EF f/1.4.

Where this Sony lens excels at is all the extra functionality mirrorless offer, incredible resolving power for modern day lens, build quality and suitability for hybrid video and photo applications. Sony also has lens that can take full advantage of maximum shooting speed.

There are value options out there, especially from 3rd party manufacturers that are sometimes the same or if not better than first party. Enthusiasts, professionals and commercial businesses sometimes want the best and that extra performance despite the cost. I have used some third party lens (and highly rate lens such as the Samyang 85mm AF) but little issues such as inconsistent colour cast can make them less desirable.

I am thankful Sony is more open to third party manufacturers to allow so many different lens options at different prices.

  • Can anyone confirm I can utilise the Cashreward 12% for the Sony A7 IV assuming Sony Australia price matches?

    • +1

I've done that before (price matched a7iv) and got my cashback paid out.

    • +4

I tried, and they’ve not accepted my cash back - it’s now in limbo. Plenty of others too.

Just because some people have been successful doesn’t mean it’ll work.

And the CR rep has basically said that cash back on price match is up to Sony anyway.

Save a grand and buy the f1.4.
Telling yourself the extra tiny weeny bit of speed is worth the weight and size is fooling yourself.

If doesn't draw any better than the 1.4 either.
But hey, it's like supercars, bragging rights.

    • You got a valid point, even better if you buy Sigma Art 50mm 1.4.

I think I would rather buy the 105mm 1.4, the absolute beast if I don't mind the weight and size :D

Link to the Sony 1.4 GM at $1294

      • +1

        Right

    • +3

Except the Sony 50 1.4 is not a $1000 cheaper. In this instance, the two are almost the same price.

    • +1

This deal is actually cheaper than the f1.4. I prefer the f1.4 for the siz, weight, and filter thread, but price has definitely been in favour of the f1.2 lately.

  • This or the Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG DN? The Sigma seems to be very sharp according to Dustin Abbott's review.

    • +1

Hi Dave, I would say the Sigma is worth a try for photography enthusiasts. But at the end of the day, it depends on your budget and needs on optical performance.

The new Sigma 50 F1.4 perform relatively bad on the chromatic aberration consider it’s a 2023 lens; but it’s something you can avoid during photo shoots. Find more comparisons info at this blog: https://sonyalpha.blog/2023/02/07/sigma-50mm-f1-4-dg-dn/#41_…

You can get the brand new Sigma DGDN for like $1078 on EBay, and tbh I don’t see the optical performance on 50 1.2gm worth extra $1200.
