GPT-4 will it be a game changer?

What do you think of GPT-4? Will it be a job killer?

It will probably kill any jobs that spit out drivel disguised with enough spin to make it sound plausible.

Lucky some of our more famous forums posters are volunteers then 😉

So your average main-stream media articles, political speeches etc?

    • So everything but real jobs like builder, plumber, flipping burgers.

    • So most Ozbargain posters would need to be concerned?

People were saying mathematicians would lose their jobs when calculators came out

    • Yes, because it's just the same thing

If you'll excuse me, I'm off to the blacksmith. It's right next door to Video 2000.

i think the point being that people who don’t know what a mathematician does might have thought they could be replaced with a calculator, and people who don’t know what journalists/authors/marketers do might think they could be replaced by GPT-4.

To me it is very analogous to when desktop publishing came out. Lots of school newsletters in comic sands suddenly turned up, with clip art etc. This didn’t replace graphic artists because those documents weren’t being produced by graphic artists - they had been done on a typewriter and photocopied.
So the new tool unleashed a huge expansion of the market for ‘desktop publishing’ to the point where graphic designer is now a pretty common job. The new tool unlocked new opportunities.

Forty years later and Canva etc. is squeezing the last drips out of this market, capturing the lowest rung who don’t have the time/money/skills to whip up a menu for their cafe or flyer for the sausage sizzle, by charging a few dollars for an adequate, easy template.

Is there writing currently being done so poorly that GPT-4 will be an improvement? Maybe. I can imagine somebody posting a job cover letter might use it. But those people aren’t otherwise employing a journalist to write their cover letter, they are doing their best, recycling one the saw online or getting a friend to help.

And there is plenty of terrible click bait algorithmically generated web content already. GPT-4 might make those earlier terrible bot sites redundant.

What it won’t do is replace high value communication, like a good novel or 4 Corners investigation. Are there some people currently employed to rewrite press releases for a news wire? Sure. Might they be replaced by this? Maybe, at least part of their job, but that also probably means they can do more in other parts.

        • But, mathematicians are awesome and journalists/marketers are a scourge (some authors have value)

  • No.

I think GPT will just get better and better. I tried asking GPT3 to make me an itinerary for my upcoming trip. The itinerary generated was based off what people have recommended on the internet, however it did not take into account opening hours and one of the attractions was closed on the day that was suggested.

I tried to do the same thing in GPT3.5 and the generated results have avoided the same mistake.

Technology always kills some jobs and creates new ones.

Even with white collar jobs, look at how many people work in banks or as secretaries these days compared to even a couple of decades ago. But it hasn't caused mass unemployment.

From what I understand it's like self-driving cars.

Awesome idea, and to make something decent is relatively easy to do and appears impressive.

But the difference between decent and very good are decades away. I can use ChatGPT to get an idea of how something looks/should be set up, but if you actually look at the suggestion further it's riddled with issues. It's a long way away from being very good.

As an AI language model, I do not have personal thoughts or opinions. However, I can tell you that GPT-4 is not yet publicly available, and its capabilities and potential impacts are not yet fully known.

It is possible that GPT-4, like other advanced AI models, could lead to job displacement in some industries as it becomes capable of performing certain tasks that were previously done by humans. However, it is also possible that GPT-4 could create new job opportunities and improve productivity in various sectors.

Ultimately, the impact of GPT-4 on jobs will depend on how it is developed, deployed, and used by organizations and individuals. It is important to consider both the potential benefits and challenges of this technology as it continues to evolve.

It's useful in IT in the same way that Google is (or was, it sucks now). If you know how to use it efficiently you will be a better and more productive employee.

    GPT-4?

Is just one closed product. Underlying tech is the killer. Ai will stomp on things we take for granted. Like video camera footage. Pretty much impossible to fabricate prior to 2023. But now video has lost its "self-verify" advantage, because Ai can paint pixels to look like anything. I'm missing the days (last year) when video was too hard to fake, so had to be real.

Could Ai be the most important thing humanity has ever worked on? Is Ai more profound than electricity or fire? It's kinda surprising Big Tech is saying this. Let's just hope the right people are holding the fire stick… people like … OpenAi? and… Microsoft, Google? Oh shit.
