Are Middle Names Critical to Have on Fiji Airways Ticket ?

I have forgotten to include our middle names on my airline tickets (which are on our passports) — have you heard of people getting refused entry to a flight because of this? This is for a flight on Fiji Airways from Vancouver to Sydney in August this year.

I enquired with Fiji Airways, and I got this response "Please be advised that a middle name would be required for your travel, and a name correction fee of AUD 130 applies per ticket." However, I'm wondering if that is actually true, or just some sort of automatic answer the help desk gives out, but not what actually happens at the ticket check in the airport.

The name on the ticket should match the name on the passport. If people at the checking counter say, no deal, that's the end of the line for you.
Edit: For some airlines, middle names are optional. https://www.pointhacks.com.au/missing-middle-name/

Please be advised that a middle name would be required for your travel, and a name correction fee of AUD 130 applies per ticket.

So the actual question is up to what point can you pay this fee. If it becomes an issue at the airport, but you can pay it there, well you simply see what happens at the airport. If there is some deadline by which the change has to be made and the fee paid, and then you get an airport jobsworth at check in, you could be SOOL.

    Roll the dice I say

I had this exact question with a LATAM booking last year, and the website wasn't so helpful.
I did a dummy booking and there actually was not a space to enter a middle name in the booking - check if the same is true with Fiji Airways. There is no way they can reasonably charge you a change fee if they did not allow you to input your middle name in the first place.

(FYI - I got on my flight with no issues)

brilliant! You are quite right — I just tried to purchase a ticket directly off the Fiji Airways website, and there is no possibility of entering a middle name, they only give fields for first/last name.

Thanks heaps Ryefig, and others for your contribution.

Most airline websites only have fields for first and last name. When I book, I always add my middle name to the first name. For example, if the traveller's name is John Middle Citizen, they will enter John Middle as their first name and Citizen as the last name.

Yeah I booked flights with Fiji Airways a couple of months ago and did specifically note during the booking process it only asks for First name and Last name. Had it asked for Given Names and Last Name you could reasonably infer this to include middle names, but First Name is very specific and does not really suggest in any way that a middle name is expected. I specifically did not enter a middle name as it did not ask for one. I can imagine many passengers likely do not provide a middle name given it does not request it.

  • You will find out on check-in day or send them an email and ask for clarification.

As ryefig mentioned, generally the rule is to enter it in if they ask for it, but not if they don't - they shouldn't reasonably refuse you if there wasn't an option to provide your middle name. Besides, in the majority of cases I've heard where people missed their middle names they were still allowed to board.

The fact I have never seen a news.com.au or ACA "warning" of this would indicate that middle names don't matter.

If airlines were routinely rejecting people for middles names you would think you would hear about it.

I flew return Adelaide to Los Angeles on Fiji over Jan/Feb and my friend forgot to put his middle name on his boarding pass and it was fine, they didn't even question it. So I'd assume you'll be fine unless you get a bitchy staff member that wants to cause a fuss over it

I've never had an issue with this

In the past many,.many years of flying, I never add my middle name to the booking.

    No issues at all!

Hi! Wondering if the traveller has an update on this? Was all ok in the end?

    • It was no problem at all, never mentioned. I didn't spend cash to update my tickets with the middle name. As was pointed out above, when booking the tickets they specifically ask for first and last name, not middle.

  • For up to Fiji and return it's OK, For an onward trip to the US your name should match per passport as they do database checks for any red flags. on your visa and background status.
