What you do with this? Like can you extract cash from credit card?

    • it is a portable eftpos device. If you want someone to pay you, you can use this device to let them pay you via their debit or credit card. I believe you will create an account on their system and tie it to your bank account so you can receive the payment.

Yes, that is my understanding. Essentially a cheap way for a small business to take credit card payments. You see them everywhere at markets nowadays. One advantage for the customer is you can pay with Amex as the fee is the same for all types of credit cards.

        • I just saw this on the weekend when I paid a pop up store
          Good idea

      • You can also use tap and pay via phone too

    • If you used the referral to get free processing then technically you could do this although I suspect it would be against the rules (not charging your own credit card) & they will likely block the transaction, especially if you didn't have any real transactions.

    • Yep, as per my post - they seem to be price matching Amazon.

ohh my bad. didn't see that part. sorry.

I've seen homeless people in America pull out this machine when you tell them you have no change/cash

Wonder if the same will eventually happen here

    • +2

Already seen in Melbourne in 2018

      https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5777777/Homeless-ma…

Homeless man takes out EFTPOS machine and says 'I take cards too' when a woman eating breakfast at a restaurant says she doesn’t have any change.

Ms Vella said the beggar approached her at Hella's Cakes in the inner Melbourne suburb of Richmond and asked for a dollar.

  • 6% + 30 cents (excl. GST) per Afterpay transaction.

  • how much are the fees per transaction?

    • +3

1.9% That’s per tap or insert for Visa, Mastercard, eftpos, American Express, JCB and international credit cards.

2.2% That’s for every manually keyed-in or Card on File payment.

      6% + 30 cents (excluding GST) That’s for all in-person Afterpay transactions.

I think 1.9% is a reasonable fee given there's no other like monthly fee
Still a great option for casual small business or even like garage sale

      • +1

You can even create an invoice & email to a customer to allow them to pay via credit card if they can't bring a credit card to you & don't want to read their credit card number to you (still a 2.2% fee).

  • Interesting that there is a mag stripe reader on this.
Does anyone know if there are restrictions as to what types of cards can be used on this?

    • +1

Theres no mag stripe reader, only chip insert

  • Been this price for months!!
BUT: Fees gone UP, on refunds you ALSO lose the fees!!

    • Yes, but last post ran out of stock & the Square website says the special will finish on 16 April 2023.
Haven't the fees always been 1.9%?

  • +1

Could these be used to extract cash from discounted prepaid debit cards (such as this one)?

    • Potentially, yes - but with a $2.20 Square fee and a $7.50 Coles activation fee you'd be making 30c by moving $100 around. PROBABLY not worth the time spent!

    • +1

Yes, but there is a 1.9% fee

      • Use one the referral link & there is no fee for the first $1000 transactions.

    • +1

If I've got my maths right, the $250 card can be purchased for $231.75. The Square fee is 1.9% of $250 or $4.75. Therefore the cost of getting $250 cash is $236.50.

A free $13.50 if I've got the maths right and there's no other catch?

      • Yes, but is it worth the effort?
Just use the $250 card at Aldi/Woolies, Petrol or anything else you would buy anyway.

        • Just a thought process more than anything, at least at the moment. In theory I can do this five times a day over the promotion period and claim $67.50 a day straight into the bank.

          • @Seraphin7: The vanilla card needs to be swiped and this square reader is payWave only. So I don't think your plan will work

      • It’s decent but Prezze accepts the coles Mastercard and you can buy the smart e-gift card to change into very useful bunch of different gift cards

      • Where you get the $250 card for $231.75 from?

  • Haven't these always been $39?

    • The normal price is $59 but are on special until 16 April 2023.
They have been on special for a little while but the last Ozbargain post was a early last month & they ran out of stock.

  • Am I right in saying that the 1.9% transaction fee is tax deductible (at your marginal tax rate) for ABN holders?

    • Yes

  • +1

Can people use it as a quick and slightly expensive way to meet minimum credit card spend? Could be useful if bpay loophole closes

    • What is the Bpay loophole?

      • You can pay via Beem to pay bills with cc and it counts as transaction

        • Aaah - thanks.

        • Is it just bills? Can we do this for P2P transactions too?

  • so basically this can be the cheap credit card cash advance machine too…

  • Few questions

What description will it show on the credit card holder statement??

If someone purchased off you and does a credit card chargeback, how do you defend it?

    • I used one yesterday at a barber shop.
      Statement line is

Square POS 21/3 SQ *BUSINESS NAME

Need a fully established business to sign up properly. Doesn't say that anywhere in product listing.

Was asked for business bank statements, type of business, etc. Definitely can't use for personal use to be paid back etc
