Best Replica Furniture Store/ Brand in Terms of Quality: Value Ratio

Hi All

Looking to decorate my place in a Mid-Century Modern (MCM) style but anyone that has looked into these statement MCM pieces can tell you that the Herman Miller/ Eames authentics are mostly not OzB-friendly. Although there's a fair few things that Ikea and Target do a good homage/ capture the essense of, in the end if you want the Eames lounge chair ($12K for a chair yikes) or Negouchi coffee table you're either going with legal replicas or the real thing (not entertaining illegal, branded replicas).

For those with experience, what's the best replica furniture store, or what are your experiences with any of these brands?

Bugger replicas. I scored myself a TH Brown 6 seater dining set on the weekend at auction for $250. One owner (heading into a nursing home).

Do yourself a favour. Discover the world of auctions and FB marketplace, never pay what theyre asking and broaden your MCM repertoire (teak is 100% overdone and should be used sparingly).

What is it about MCM you like? Which era? Atomic 50s? Post war? 70s? Scandi? Italian?

    • I think I'm drawn to updating the 50's style for the modern home. Just think the fun geometric shapes and colourful tones make it a bit more fun than Scandi

      • I'm in the middle of renovating a 1959 cream brick place and preparing to add an extension. Every state has it's own style. Feel free to stalk my collection - https://pin.it/1zMNnlV

My best advice is - invest in a Pinterest board (for late night shopping stashes and inspiration of the direction you want), only buy the best you can afford and don't buy unless you know that it's adding value to your overall look etc.

Be aware that both original and replica MCM furniture can be both terribly uncomfortable and downright useless in terms of needs. For example, I love me a TV chair as much as the next person. Sitting in them is super comfy, getting in and out of them is terrible.

Consider what parts for you give you that feeling of that era. For me, it's not the furniture. It's the lighting, accents.

    Marketplace/gumtree

See too many replicas on the side of the road having failed/scuffed.

    MCM = mighty car mods

    That is all

  • If stored in a decent condition, you can't go past the craftmanship and timber quality of original pieces.
The hardwood from the 1950s was usually from trees hundreds of year old.

Compared to the modern cheap replicas using mdf or other low quality pine/timber. Look good but won't last. And terrible resale value.
You see lots of people on FB paying $3-5k for a couch, expecting to sell it for $1200+ which is totally unrealistic for a second-hand couch.

Getting a scruffy looking mid century couch on FB for $200-300, spend a day or two restoring it - maybe even reupholster it later. Sell it later for a great profit.
Much better than a flatpack/factory made replica that costs $1500+. Good conversation piece too
