[Resolved] Cashrewards Query: Changing Credit Card in Booking.com

hello fellow Ozbargainers! I booked some accomodation through cashrewards and booking.com but would like to cancel my credit card. Has anyone successfully changed their card and still received the cashback? seems a bit ridiculous that changing my credit card information will void my cashback but the response from CR was "If you change your credit card this may result in the cashback being declined"

I can't cancel and re-book as there is no other accomodation for our dates. Worst case scenario I keep the card open for an extra month but the whole policy just doesn't make sense.

  • It kind of doesn't make sense because what if someone makes a booking with a card that is going to expire soon, or it gets lost/stolen and a replacement card is needed.

If the booking is already paid in full and isn't fiddled around with I think it would make sense that Cashrewards would have no clue that the old card has been cancelled.

    • Sounds like you will just lose out on your cashback

Agree, doesn't make sense. I was looking to buy airline ticket with CC that I was about to close. The insurance company told me that the complimentary travel insurance will still be valid even if the trip that is purchased is few months after CC is closed.

A WHILE ago like last year I was told it was okay for me to use Mastercard instead of VISA (that I put on the booking) As I wanted to use the coles prepaid mastercards, or my mastercard credit card, instead of my standard bank Visa debit card.

Was told that its upto the hotel to collect payment, and they can collect however they accept payments.

Mine was successfully tracked and approved. It was no upfront payment booking, with free cancellation.

    • thanks for the information! unfortunately mine is free cancellation up to a week before so i dont think it will be an option for me

      • you mean you paid online already ?
aka not an no upfront payment booking ?

or you mean the hotel has put a temporary charge right now online, and will actually charge you when you visit the hotel ?

        • no upfront payment, I don't know why I just assumed i would get charged once my free cancellation policy was up but i think you might be onto something here! doesn't look like i will get charged until check in so i can just pay with a different card thank you!

@Limitless: yes I think you should be okay, if you have not already paid for it, just pay at hotel with your desired card.

Worked fine for me in Dec 2022, not only i paid with a different card number, but with a different card network too, (mastercard instead of visa)

OP Thank you for confirming CR's position.

I was in the same position, at the end of a 12 month tenure with Credit Card A and about to start Credit Card B.

Like you I thought it would be silly for CR to reject based on a changed CC but I assumed the worst of CR or SB and went with my fall back CC instead.

  • I was in a similar situation. Was waiting for my Bendigo mastercard (no foreign currency fee) to arrive and took up a %12 CB offer using a CC that charged a %3 foreign currency fee. Messaged CR support and was advised that changing the CC was no problem as long as i didnt change anything else in the booking. Did it today via the app. Will see what happens after i get back in September. Have an official enquiry reference just in case.

    • thanks for sharing, interesting that you got a different response!

  • Hey guys. I flagged this very concern with Booking.com back in April 2022. Here's my question and their official response :)

    My question:

Hi again xxxxxx. Super quick question. If a member makes an online booking with a credit card and then pays upon checking in at the hotel with a completely different card to that on file, will that void cashback? Also, what if they change the ‘update my card’ on the website after a booking has been made, will this void cashback? Looking forward to hearing back soon. Thank you!

    Their response:

Hi TA. No, it shouldn't - the only thing it may impact is Cashrewards MAX as the user needs to use their ANZ card to Pay Now and boosted MAX cashback won't be valid if they don't. But across the board - no, this won't be an issue. Thanks xxxxxx.

    • Thanks TA! good to know, hopefully others can search and find this answer in the future!

      • Have a lovely Easter :)

        • you too!

        • But if I change my date so it's longer you will lose cashback?
