Are New Window Box Aircons Much Quieter and Better than The Old Days?

I remember the ceiling and wall vibrating goodness of that cold air maker in my hot as fk shitbox home back in the day. Electricity didn't cost so much back in those days and the aircon drowned out the traffic so everything was good. Simpler times.

Are modern window\box aircons much the same? Or should I be saving for a little installation technician to put in a split system?

Depends on make, model and the structure of the window/surrounds… some are whisper quiet.. but I dont think they are as efficent as splits, nor as good.

    YMMV

How little were you planning for the installation technician to be? I know he'd have to be small to be put in a split system, but I don't think it's practical saving up for a guy the size of a deck of cards to run through all the ducts, etc.

    • Huh?

saving for a little installation technician

        Presumably?

        • Lol. That makes funny sense now. Cheers

Depends on how big is the space you need to cool down. If it is a larger area, then you will need a higher power air con, which means you cannot an existing power circuit and will need new wiring to install the air con anyway.

    • I have a 4 bay shed and was going to build an internal office in a bay in the end, so not a huge area, maybe 5m x 3m.

I know for a normal 3x3 bedroom you can probably get away with a 2kw air con. My garage is converted into office space and it is 6x6 and I have a 3.5kw air con which is quite adequate in the summer in Brisbane. The electrician did a back to back install using the electrical outlet nearby. However, it does depend on what your shed walls are made of and how much insulation you have as well.

I forgot to answer your question, I recently bought this for a 3x3 bedroom window during Kogan 17% off sale. https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-vertical-window-air-condiā€¦

It is arriving soon, I will let you know how it performs. :)

If you're going to build it just put a split system in, they're pretty cheap and much quieter.

They are better in some ways, but basically the concept and design hasn't really changed much over the years. Due to the price point, they are on/off style compressor units, hence the shaking of the wall, they are still loud as the compressor is basically there in the hole in the wall.

But they are cheap, they are self install and noise aside, they generally work well.

If its a office, and you don't like the white noise the box adds to the picture, then yes. A split with a inverter will generally be a lot nicer, but more costly to install.

Split systems are meant to be the most efficient for a single room or portion of a house. For heating too, now that gas is expensive.

They are way better than the one we had growing up in the 80s.

You can now hold a pretty normal conversation in the vicinity of one, however, they're still far noisier than a split system which pretty much only emits a whoosing sound of moving air.

They're pretty noisy if mounted in a wall that acts like a drum (weatherboard, blueboard, tin etc.) Even in a brick wall the unit itself can vibrate annoyingly. Plus they allow a lot noise in from outside.

I have a small 1.6kw in my bedroom which is a little quieter than my 40cm fan on max speed and much quieter than a portable aircon i had before it, but it's still much noisier than a split system.

If you can, go for a split system.

Globally, there is no longer much demand for window-boxes. Other countries don't have the same regulation and extortionate install costs for split-systems that Australia does. So everyone just gets a split system.

    window\box

Backslash? You really do like Windows-based products :-)

I remember investigating if there were any inverter window models a while back but didn't find anything available in AU. Inverter model would be much quieter once it had cooled the room down, rather than the annoying on/off compressor noise.

  • New window box air conditioners have come a long way in terms of noise reduction and efficiency compared to the older models. Modern window air conditioners are designed with advanced technology and materials that help to reduce noise and improve energy efficiency.

One significant improvement in modern window air conditioners is the use of variable speed compressors, which can adjust the cooling output to match the room's temperature more precisely. This technology allows the unit to run at a lower speed, resulting in quieter operation and reduced energy consumption.

Moreover, newer models have also been designed with improved insulation and sound-dampening materials that can help to reduce the noise generated by the compressor and fan. This means that you can enjoy a more comfortable and quieter environment when using a modern window box air conditioner.

Overall, while there may be some variation in noise levels and efficiency among different models, it is safe to say that modern window box air conditioners are generally quieter and better than the older models. It is always a good idea to read product reviews and compare specifications to find the best window box air conditioner that meets your needs and budget.

    • No thanks for the copy-paste. Where can we find these models? I don't see any inverter models at the usual suspects.
