Fixing a Gigabyte RTX 3080 Master Rev 1.0

Hi all,

Recently, I acquired an RTX 3080 from eBay that was listed under "for parts." Upon inspection one of the listed pictures, I noticed that one of the pcie fingers appeared to be broken off, and someone had attempted to repair it by soldering it back on.

I was able to purchase the card for less than $400 , and unsurprisingly, it did not function to output pictures. I tried my best to remove the solder and managed to get it to work briefly for about 5 minutes, but it stopped functioning correctly during the Haven benchmark.

As a result, I am seeking recommendations for shops or individuals in Australia who can provide graphic card repair services. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

It's almost like the card was sold due to it not being economical to repair. If you can't fix it yourself, you are going to end up with a repaired card that cost the same as just buying a working one.

    • Thanks, do you know anyone/business that provides GC repair service? I am still keen to get a quote at least.

I don't, not sure who would even take on a job like that. I assume these would be a multilayer board, if an inside layer is fractured it's not really repairable at all as far as I know. Even if someone will attempt to repair it, they will surely give no warranty at all on the repair. You will be better off selling it on eBay again, and buying a working card.

  • I once called MSI >5 years ago to find out if they repair out-of-warranty cards. They said they don't and don't know who does. It gets shipped offshore for refurb.
If you google, there are a few electronic repair shops in Australia but usually they are far away so means posting / couriering the card and trusting it with them for a few weeks. If you go down this route you should contact them with photos, etc to see if they can do the job. Also, once repaired, it may still not work if there are other things wrong with it, eg, some solder lines have cracked.

    • Happy to go this route, however, google does not provide much help, perhaps it is the keywords that I used which were incorrect, I search for "graphic card repair services in Australia" which came back to JW computer, gumtree, Centrecom and other sponsored results which I am not 100% confident is the thing I was looking for.

Do you know any specific names/websites that I can investigate further?

      • Google can be weird at times. I googled similar to what you did "Graphics card repairs australia" and first item was: https://allelectronicsrepairs.com.au/
I'm not associated or ever used them but they seem to be able to repair all sorts of electronic stuff. I think they've been around awhile because when I was trying to get my GPU repaired > 5years ago, I do recall a repairer in Buderim Qld. I didn't go ahead as it was a GTX660 which had served well for many years and I had bought it 2nd hand for about $50-$100 so wasn't worth reballing / repairing.
        Good luck!

        Edit:
So try expanding your search to maybe local repairers of circuit boards or other electronic equipment and not just graphics cards. However, could still be a problem if they fix the problem you identified and there is something else wrong with it.

        • Thanks, contact the bloke and will see if he responded back. It appears he is in huge demand and has a 6 month waiting period.

          • @NeverPayRRP9930: Wow! Good side hustle / retirement hobby if you have the skills!

          • @NeverPayRRP9930: Whereabouts are you located? I just googled "electronic circuit board repair" and came up with a few more: eg, Semtron Electronic Repairs

  • I think that brake cleaner youtube guy went to Taiwan and got his faulty graphics card repaired there.

    • Not going to Taiwan anytime soon, needs to be local for now.

  • Not aware of anyone willing to spend the time and risk to do uneconomical jobs like this here. Maybe try asking some of those kiosks in malls that do phone repairs but doubt they will.

You might want to spend hours watching some TronicsFix videos on soldering repairs and attempt yourself bit by bit.

  • If I’m not mistaken the PCIe lanes need to have an insanely close length to each other otherwise the timing will be off and it won’t work.
I think the time to troubleshoot and try to repair it will cost more than buying another RTX 3080. If it is fixable at all.
Probably best to cut your losses

  • If it's the damaged gold contact pins that slot into the motherboard, you're SOL.

If it's anything else, you could likely contact Gigabyte Australia who may be able to provide out of warranty repairs.

  • You got ripped, you can buy 2nd hand working ones for only $250 or so more than that.

    • From where? eBay is usually $800+. Gumtree isn't any better in my local area

      • Tech trading forums.

        • No way. You would be crazy lucky to get a 3080 for $250.

@Aureus: I said $250 MORE than $400 wasted on a non working video card. So around the $650 mark.

@garetz: Ah. Of course. Sorry my bad.

The guy who sold this card hit the jackpot.
