Max Brenner has quietly (as in not published anywhere) upped their referral bonus to 1000 Cocoa Beans (worth $10) for the referrer and also added 500 Cocoa Beans for the referee (in addition to the $5 Hybrid Cash for signing up).
They also removed the banner in-app to refer others, but the referral program is definitely still going (just type the Referring Member No (starting with MBLD) in the first field when signing up).

    I remember enjoying Max Brenner… then 3 things made me just not bother with them anymore:
    1) They stopped selling the pre-packed chocolates, which was something i'd always buy even when dropping in for a desert. The absolute best was the Ecuadorian chocolate chips.
    2) A staff member came in with a few tungs of Homebrand Vanilla Ice cream - not exactly the premium experience…
    3) The tables became really stricky and unpleasant. I felt dirty sitting on the tables, and some of the times I was one of less than a handful of people there, so there wasn't an excuse.

    Once it went downhill that much, I just didn't go back.

    Now I visit Godiva, Lindt and even Koko Black.

      If you sign up without using a referral code you only get $5 worth. With a referral code you get $10 worth.

      I just tried again and can confirm $10 for each.

    Have never referred (until now), but Beans keep being added to account.

    $1 spend earns 10 beans (never spent)
    Apparently 100 beans are worth $1 (never used my 4k beans)

        That's why I was surprised almost 4k points have been added over a year, without spending (almost anything on top of free $5 & birthday hot choc) & not referring (just added referral code)!

        Just random dates of multiple "Points Increase", 1 x "Redeem Money" (using $5 for signing up) & 1 x Spend (with birthday free hot choc).

        Only been to a store twice, but I've shared lunch elsewhere with local MB Manager. Her shout!

        For me as a referrer, the Beans add up well and are correct (got 500 beans per referral from Apr2002 to Late2022, got 1000 beans per referral from Jan2023 onward).

        For my referee, the Beans do not add up properly. Case in point, my referee got –

        • 500 Beans and $5 Hybrid Cash on Sign up.
        • Spent the $5 Hybrid Cash, and so got 50 beans (for the spend) and another 500 Beans as first purchase bonus (like I've mentioned here)
        • However, on this event, the referee's transaction history shows: 'Increase 500 beans (twice).' Hence, having spent 0 beans, they have credit of 500 beans x 3 rows in the transaction history. However their total beans is only 1,050. Going by the transaction history, it should be 500 + 50 + 500 + 500 = 1,550.

        Never understood this discrepancy. Observed on two of my referee's accounts.

      I don't find the T&Cs exhaustive enough. There's no mention of 'Refer a Friend' benefit at all. Also, this is damn funny:

      Unless otherwise advised by Max Brenner Australia, 10 Cocoa Beans will be awarded to a Member’s Account for each dollar they spend on full priced items with Max Brenner, discounted or special-priced items.
      The spend amount per item will be rounded up to the next whole dollar amount. For example: an eligible item with a value of $12.95 will accrue 13 Cocoa Beans (Loyalty Points), an eligible item with a value of $21.00 will accrue 21 Cocoa Beans (Loyalty Points) and an eligible item with a value of $25.05 will accrue 26 Cocoa Beans (Loyalty Points).

      Looks like they forgot the multiplication table of 10 !

    Previously the referrer got 500 Cocoa Beans and the referee got nothing

    I have used this referral system in the past when it was launched (around April 2022). IIRC, earlier —

    • Referrer got 500 Beans (equivalent to $5)
    • Referee got 500 Beans and $5 Hybrid Cash

    Also, when the referee makes the very first purchase (using the $5 Hybrid Cash or a Normal transaction or even the Free Birthday Hot Chocolate), they get the usual transaction beans (10 beans per dollar spent) plus another bonus 500 beans. This is not written anywhere but happened for both my and my partner's account and so we both have 1000 beans now.

    With the update mentioned in this post, I think, now —

    • Referrer gets 1000 Beans (equivalent to $10)
    • Referee gets 500 Beans (equivalent to $5) and $5 Hybrid cash (same as earlier)

    So, I think the only change is the Referer getting 1000 Beans instead of the earlier 500.

    Also, all referees watch out when you do your very first transaction. You will get another Bonus 500 Beans when you do so.

    Also, downloading the App is not necessary. You can just sign up at https://maxbrenner.redcatcloud.com.au and reap the same benefits. Although App is much easier and convenient, it may help those who don't approve unnecessary installation of Apps. Also, while redeeming or ordering online too you can use the same URL.

      It looks like the 2x500 points for referrer kicked in late 2022 some time from my points history

      Didn't know about the first purchase bonus though - I wonder if that will still apply now even though you get $5 + 500 points for signing up with referral

        The first purchase 'Bonus 500 Beans' was obtained by my referee when they used the $5 Hybrid cash for first purchase on 30-Jan-2023, and by another referee when they first purchased on 24-Feb-2023. So I think it very much exists even today. Watch out for your beans go up by 500 on your first purchase.

        The discrepency though, is that the transaction history will show 2x500 beans credit on the first purchase, but the beans increase only by 500. I can't really contest this, as this bonus 500 beans on first purchase isn't mentioned anywhere, or in their T&Cs. It is just my observation.

        Also, I am not aware what happens if the first purchase is done by using the beans themselves. I'd suggest not to use beans for the first purchase. In my own case, I had just redeemed my Free Birthday Hot Chocolate (no spend), but still got the bonus 500 beans on that event, as that was technically my first 'purchase' at Max Brenner using loyalty.

      Yes same here, was told thay they no longer accept order paid using cocoa beans earned through referral. Why they don't wipe all the points if they no longer honour it.
