Celing Lamp Replacement

Just recently my ceiling lamp in rented apartment died. I'm not sure how to replace it since it looks like led strips not a light bulb inside it .

You can't, you'll need a new fitting which isn't a tenant's responsibility. Contact your rental agent who will organise a replacement with the owner.

  • There are kits marketed as oyster conversion kits but require a sparky anyway so just get onto the REA as per above and make them earn their keep.

  • Your REA will have a handyman who will do all this for you at their own expense.

The handyman better be a licenced electrician for that job.

  • A registered Electrical Contractor will be required for the replacement. Not just an Electrician. Ask for a Safety Certificate upon completion.

      Not just an electrician

Would you care to explain why you think there's a difference?

      • An electrician is required to work under a registered Electrical Contractor. There are two separate qualifications. So, you can be both an electrician and an Electrical Contractor (operate on their own) or just an electrician (cannot operate on their own). There is a massive difference… If they are not operating under an EC, you void your house insurance and no public liability.

Ring ALL electricians and take the one that gives you the largest kickback and then force the landlord to cop it……

  • Sent the photo to your agency and say it isn't user serviceable.

I am surprised the landlord would put in something like this instead of LED globes. Not sure if they got mugged by the agency / electrician to install it.

Electrician tried to mug me $250 for an extractor fan that is worth $80.

    • It’s a double edged sword with these LED fittings. Generally last a lot longer and are more reliable, but often not user serviceable.

      • As a landlord I alway think about whether something is user serviceable because nothing worse than tenants having to wait for a tradies who either doesn't turn up or does a crap job and actually taking more time (and money).

I'd rather give the tenant $10 to buy bulbs than a tradie who tries to charge me $100 for the light then $100 to actually change it.

  • Thank you all. I'll try to contact the agency
