Cheap Fresh Produce Canberra

Does anyone know where you can get cheap fruit & veggies around Canberra?

We were in Brisbane recently & there's a few places which have cheap specials eg. Pumpkin & watermelon 50c/kg, sweet potato 9c/kg- you get the idea.

Please don't suggest the markets as I've been & they're not any cheaper than Colesworth even end of day.

Thanks 👍

    Parliament House.
    Full of fruit.

Those specials were probably clearance. Like the grocer or supplier needed to get rid of it asap. You can't count on 9c/kg sweet potato at any particular place.

    • Yes we're aware of that. Not fussy about it being a particular fruit- We just eat whatever is on special that day/week. Items not on special are about half of what you pay at Coles (and it lasts the same time). Crazy we need to resort to family bringing down fruit & veggies from interstate when they visit us.

No one makes money transporting fresh produce at 9c/kg, much less producing it. They're dumping, and you were just at the right place at the right time

    • Yup. They might make a few dollars off it, but only when the alternative was putting it all in the bin for collection, which they also need to pay for.

And the issue is that not much produce is grown in the immediate vicinity of Canberra which would warrant the transport costs to dump oversupply.

Mushrooms possibly, but can't think of much else. As others have mentioned in the thread, markets have a quality premium but not much on pricing. When I lived in the ACT I found Fysjwick end of day specials were good on meat and perishables, but never veg.

      • Thank you, this is helpful to know

    • When they give you a free 4kg of fruit without even buying anything, that's obvious they're dumping! Which places always have a few specials like this is what I'm asking. Locals, surely there's somewhere??

Welcome to Canberra. Nothing is cheap here.
Different grocers pop up time to time trucking direct from sydney but dont generally last long.

Better quality produce from markets e.g. belco, Epic, CIT farmers market but prices will vary.

    • Thank you, this is unfortunately helpful & what we thought is the case

  • Asian grocers are always cheap. Spring onions 99c a bunch, same for bok choy, Chinese broccoli etc.
