Recommendations on a 2nd Dehumidifier

Hey All,
We've currently got a 25L/day De'Longhi Dehumidifier (compressor based) and looking at getting a 2nd dehumidifier so we can better cover both ends of the house.

Being based in Western Sydney NSW, I think it puts us in the middle ground of if compressor or desiccant based is better, given we have the compressor one already i thougth maybe a desiccant one… but they are generally a lower rating & more expensive for what you get (have also seen comments they increase room temperature more, maybe not a bad thing in winter & cost most to run)

So I'm still tossing up which to get… Please let me know any recommendations / comments on these below (or add your own recommendations).

I think this is the highest capacity desiccant model around…

Though this is quite a bit cheaper (but also lower daily capacity & a brand i'm not familair with)

This seems a good deal for another (smaller) De'Longhi compressor one
https://www.amazon.com.au/DeLonghi-Multipurpose-Dehumidifier…

Or… there is this big guy which is compressor based also marketed as handling slightly lower temperatures better (but not as low as desiccant)…

Some reviews also mentioned this one being noisy…

Any and all help appreciated!

Cheers
Jason

I'd get the Ausclimate Dessiccant that you linked or another 25L/day Delonghi if you are happy with its performance.

Yeah check out Ausclimate, I was chatting to their guy the other week cos my 10 year old compressor unit needed a new part and what he said about desiccant units put me off, the main part being that, as you said they tend to warm up the room more than the the compressor types.

    @deadpoet is your man

I suggest you don't get anything smaller than a 20L/day compressor dehumidifier, or a 10L/day dessicant dehumidifier. I personally love Ausclimate, but any other reputable brand should be fine as well — the bigger the machine, the better, and the more efficient it is. I own the Ausclimate 35L and 50L compressor models, as well as their 10L dessicant dehumidifier.

Stay away from the Hysure, go with the Ausclimate.

From what I gathered, dessicant dehumidifiers heat up the room more than compressor, so they're suited for colder climates.

You just missed a great deal on the Ausclimate 20L Compressor Dehumidifier for $276. Still available for $316 on Amazon.

I recommend waiting and setup a price alert for Amazon using camelcamelcamel on the Ausclimate dehumidifiers.

    • Cheers I'll do that.

Kinda leaning towards the 50L Ausclimate, though alittle concerned of the noise from it…
But still, the idea of the desiccant being true all-temperature (and a room heater for winter hah) could be good…

Bear in mind that compressor dehumidifers (of the same size/capacity) tend to make a similar amount of noise, since they all use a big fan — though yes, the bigger machines like the Ausclimate 50L are a little noisier since their fan and compressor is correspondingly bigger. If I remember right the noise varies from 50-60+ decibels, so you will probably have trouble sleeping with such a machine running in your bedroom if you're not used to the noise.

Also note that a dessicant dehumidifier is not as efficient in warm climates/summertime compared to the compressor dehumidifiers.

Big compressor units like the Ausclimate 50L are so chonky and efficient that they still perform well even during the cold months — that's why it's designated an "All Seasons" model. It is a beast though — it weighs 20.5kg, so you'll be mostly wheeling it around instead of shifting it from room-to-room with one hand like you can with the smaller and lighter units.

      • We have two ausclimate compressors. The supreme all seasons 50L model is really bad, it will get to the target humidity, then turn off its compressor and fan. Because the fan is off the humidity quickly rises and it turns on again. Once it gets airflow the reading comes good and it turns off again. Basically cycles on/off every 5 minutes with a big thud as the compressor kicks in.

The smaller model we have keeps the fan running at all times and cycles just the compressor. Its heaps better.

Currently on my list to take it apart and see if I can rewire the fan to stay on all the time, then it would be just as good as the smaller model.

        • That’s interesting to know…

The running noise of the 50L probably won’t be an issue as we’d likely have it outside of the bedrooms themselves. And as mentioned by deadpoet the extra oomph of the unit powering through the less efficient cold temps would likely still perform better than the 10L desiccant model.

          But… if it’s gonna clunk every 5 minutes, that’s a bit shit…

  • I got the Breville Smart Dry. It draws about 20L a day with a 3.5L tank. It can comfortably cover a large living room. You can set a humidity level and the thing automatically starts once it goes above this level and stop when it goes below. Noise wise, you can hear a fan blowing air out which doesnt really bother me but it may be too noisy for sleeping. It uses about 300w which is pretty efficient, overall it has been a good experience so far. It is on sale on Amazon at the moment.

  • simple rule: desiccant for winter, compressor for summer.
