Just watched that again last week. Great episode.

Watched it on my still running 51inch Plasma TV I bought 9 years ago for a grand. Cast from my Pixel 6a that work bought cos I've never spent more that $400 on a phone. For completeness I also have PC I spent a $2K on - 6 years ago, still running great (self build).

      • +1

The negs and plus on that comment are awesome, so many votes but so close!

      • LOL

    • Genuine question, which laptop is $180?

I assume its one of those dated laptop deals where battery capacity has significant declined?

      • +2

Refurb one from eBay, it may have cost a bit more but not much. I don't use it unplugged so no idea about the battery.

    • +1

$250 phone? you got a nokia?

      • +2

Samsung Galaxy A20, had it for a few years. Don't use it much so no need for flashy expensive phones that need to be upgraded every year. Same with TV and laptop.

  • 3 year old laptop that was about $500 at the time, 7 year old tv bought for 2 grand and an iPhone 14 Pro Max.

    • You paid 2k for a 7 year old TV?

      • +11

I think they mean they purchased a TV 7 years ago for $2k

        • +6

Or they could also mean that their 7 year old purchased the TV for $2k.

  • Must still live at home

  • +5

Which computer? I have several because they're always useful for something. Same with phones. Only 1 TV though.

    • I'd add up the cost of all the ones you use

      • A desktop costs a lot more than a laptop.
The laptop comes with built-in screen, speaker, mic, webcam, mouse and keyboard. A decent laptop costs $2000 and a used one for $1000. Whilst a decent "battlestation" will cost upwards of $3000, or completely used for $1500.

But if you're into Video Games, the desktop basically covers this front. Whilst a laptop owner would have to supplement this with a Home Console. And that will cost an additional $500-$1000.

        For the average middle-aged man, the costs are: Home ($600k) > Kids (2x $150k) > Wife (1x $100k) > Cars (2x $30k) > Dog ($5k) > Laptop ($3k) > TV+Console ($2k) > Phone ($1k) > OzBargain Membership ($3.50)

    • +5

Yep, I still have a little laptop that runs XP just incase I want to play SimTower.

      • I am toying around with this as there are a few older games that won't or crash on win 10 machine

I used to love playing Dune 2000

        • Have you tried a virtual machine?

  • Laptop ($2k) -> phone ($1600) -> tv (free bc it was mounted to the wall)

    • +1

Sometimes i just stand here and watch television for hours

  • +7

I don't think poll is well thought out.

How are we meant to compare them, unless we just bought all 3 brand new in the same week?

e.g. my phone is probably the most recently purchased, so it makes sense it's the most expensive. My PC when brand new probably cost more than how much I paid for my phone, but I bought it 2nd hand and it's now probably worth less than $100. Same with the TV when new it's probably slightly more expensive than my PC, but it's like a 10 year old model.

So Phone>TV>PC, but that's because the other stuff is hella old and phones are really expensive now?

    • +5

      Yo BS, re:

'I don't think poll is well thought out/how are we meant to compare them, unless we just bought all 3 brand new in the same week?'

You have essentially answered your own question. Just pretend your house burned down last week, and you have just been given a huge insurance payout to buy 'contents' with; without restrictions on how you can allocate it/spend it.

      • +1

You have essentially answered your own question.

Yeah I kind of thought that myself lol after reading my own comment hours later.

Post title is "What do you, or What would you spend more money on".
So yeah as you said if you lose everything and had to buy them all again it would be a planned rank. Like "I would" spend $1000 on a phone, $400 on a PC, $300 on a TV.

    • +6

I don't think poll is well thought out.

      +1

Iโ€™ve spent around $3k on my TV which is now 6 years old, around $2k on my notebook which is 3 years old and $1.3k on my phone which is only 1.5 years old. I am likely to replace all 3 by the end of this year. And if I do I will spend in the same order : TV > PC > phone, But if I look at the cost of ownership over time (cost / years of use) then its Phone > PC > TV.

So the answer depends on whether its the cost of ownership or the purchase price.

I find it odd that you would put your wife before your children. And both of them before your dog. You need to check those priorities.

      • +8

Yeah especially if sowing them together and creating a centipede, it's all wrong the order is all wrong.

Obviously computer needs to be the head, so first of all it should be "Computer >".

Have got 2 AMD AM4 desktops and 2 laptops in my home so I'm pretty sure the computer category has the highest value.

Phone: I just spent $899 Galaxy S23 Plus thanks to this deal post

TV: Samsung 4K TV cost me just $17 (thanks Click Frenzy) If I hadn't won a TV I'm pretty sure I would be a Kogan TV owner or maybe a low quality EKO from Big W.

TV: Samsung 4K TV cost me just $17 thanks Click Frenzy.

lol that throws everything out of whack. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Per year of usage, my phone > computers (desktop and laptop combined) > TV. For cost of the unit my computers (both more expensive) > phone > TV.

  • +1

Can't enjoy life without a good TV. TV first.

    • +6

That's pretty much the opposite of us. TV is very rarely turned on- we have to make a real effort to use it. Turned it on tonight, first time this week.

  • +3

TV is so old. 10 years probably. not getting a new one until kids won't draw on it

    • +1

      Aaand donโ€™t have a gaming pc..yet

  • No TV

  • TV., my phone second, my pc is just a NUC., so itโ€™s way down on the list.

  • +1

    Laptop $3k, phone $600, no TV….

  • I would have said mobile phone based on rrp, but Samsung look after their sales staff, unlike the company that Samsung supply lower grade screens and semi conductors to that give us a generous 4-5% on.
I heard a salesperson whinging abou making 70c on a $700 fruit sale. I said, yes but you own the same brand phone? Why complain? There is more money on cigarettes.

  • +2

Phones get replaced far more often than primary-use computers or TVs. We've had 3 TVs since 2005. Hard to track PCs though as there's just a random number floating around, but loads of those are just recycled old machines that cost nothing.

Computer includes laptops, tablets, desktop PCs.

I'd have to disagree with this- tablets are not computers, they're just portable media consumption devices! I really dislike tablets and imo are best turned into wall clocks.

  • +2

Computer (I am a designer), so I need a bomb ass pc
Phone - Buy one every 2-3 years now. No point getting one each year, technology isn't that advance. But when I used to work in telco, used to get one each year due to company perks.
TV - I rarely watch TV

  • Laptop $80 macbook air from gumtree (nneded new ssd), tv 65" bauhn UHD $150 from facebook marketplace, phone samsung a22 5G $120 from facebook marketplace.

Recently updated my desktop to a dell 9020 for $70. Already had the 16gb ram and ssd.

Second hand is fine. Would rather spend my money on holidays

    • Second that. I've scored so many great deals on the second hand market.

  • Gaming PC ($8050, Tower/Monitor/Peripherals ) > Phone ($1799 S23 Ultra 512gb, Goverment discount so normally more) > TV ($1795 LG A1 55" OLED, few years old now)

I also have a tablet and laptop so maybe add another $1900 to the Computer catagory idk haha.

In the way of what i would ensure i have the best of the best first it would be Phone > Computer > TV Basicly for me Phone and Computer/Tablet is tied.

    For me comfortable/desired spending range
    Computer/Laptop ($600-2000)
    TV ($200-$600)
    Phone <($400)

    Changed
Computer/Laptop- Still using by Surface for which I paid like little less than $3K. (yes I was stupid at that time, not super bargainny)
TV- Still using the first Kogan one bought from 2017, so next upgrade better be one that supports 4K HDMI @60Hz & brand be compatible with Google Chromecast with google TV's volume up and down buttons
Phones- a few times, may be like once every 15-18 months or so. ANDROID ONLY.

  • $5.5k TV OLED 77
$4k PC setup at the time about 5 years old now
$1.6K Dell XPS13 purchased in 2016 just replaced battery still going strong and use it every night for YouTube etc
$600 Mate 20 Pro even these days the triple camera is fantastic and the zoom is great. Performance is still on par

    • How long have you had your Mate 20 Pro for? How's the battery life come along? Phone's coming on 5yrs old now if you'd had it since launch

      • +1

Mines just over 3 years battery still lasts a day, considering paying the $59 to get the battery changed

      • +1

Also 4 hours on screen time per day so still good

  • Per year

    • $0: phone salary sacrifice + resell ($2,000 / 2 - $1,000)
    • $1,000: TV every four years or so ($4,000 / 4)
    • $500: laptop every four years or so with salary sacrifice and discounts ($5,500 - 20% / 2). Not including resale, which brings it even lower
  • +1

Tough one. I thought PC at first but I spend ~$1600 on a new rig every 3-7yrs (I basically use it until it dies). Monitors I've been using same ones since 2010.

Phone I get every 3yrs roughly now. Mid range up to $500 price but there's annual prepaid renewal.

TV I get once every 10yrs+ and I'm not on subscription.

Then there are OneDrive costs split between PC and Phone. Couldn't tell you the weighting.

Would have to spreadsheet this which I have no time for.

  • Don't have TV anymore. Last one we had was a standard CRT TV.

  • Thought computers were relatively old school..haven't had one for 10 years. Stopped using my laptop 5 years ago and just use my tablet for streaming shows. P30 pro phone..but do watch tv every night so like a good one of those even if it is a TCL p735 ,75 inch. Excellent tv though. No brand hype there.

  • +1

Different stories if you look at absolute values vs relative values - i.e. TVs and computers can very easily enter the thousands (or even tens of thousands) of dollars, whereas you'd almost be stupid to spend $3k+ on a phone (you're talking luxury/brand at that point, which has always been stupid in my opinion, but each to their own). But they also have very different lifetimes, typically Phone > Laptop > Television, so it would make sense to (in absolute values) spend more on a TV than a phone, since you're only buying it every 10/20 years vs every 2/4 years for a phone. The interesting comparison would be $ spent over say a 10-20 year period.

    In my case I have ~$200 phone that's ~2/3yo (so ~$70-100 p.a.), ~$1.5k laptop that's 10yo ($150 p.a.) and a ~$800 TV that's ~15yo (~$50 p.a.). I still voted for Phone > Laptop > Television, because the phone is my most-used device (and I don't think I'll be going the $200 phone again…).

This value proposition could also change if I was to be watching more TV or doing more on my laptop (i.e. gaming).

  • +2

7 years since our last tv purchase($750), 4 years since i replaced my phone ($229) wife replaced hers 2 years ago ($249) and one of the kids needed laptop for school last year($700?). We update only as required not just for new technology or the need to impress friends.

    • That's the way, mate.
I'm still rockin an 8 year old laptop just because I love it so much. TV is about 5 years old. Only replaced my phone recently because I totalled the old one and I must say I am thoroughly disappointed with it.

  • +2

Computer ($4k), TV ($1k), Phone ($450). In fairness given my IT profession and love of gaming the computer is always going to be heaviest spend. my TV is 3 years old, my phone is new but only replaced as the old Xiaomi 9T lack of updates meant I would be locked out of the corporate MDM.

  • +1

A decent computer will last much longer than all those other devices though.

  • +6

    Food > Shelter > PC

    • +1

You missed water and heating after shelter. ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • Don't forget pharmaceuticals along with water and energy; lots of people are sickly and require multiple medications like NSAIDs for arthritis, Metformin for Diabetes Type 2.

  • PC - $3k+ Desktop, $1600 Laptop, $200 laptop.
    Phone - $1200
    TV - Free.

This has been a consistent pattern with me historically.

  • Laptop 3300 + MBP 4000 + PC 3800 (Company paid)
    S21 (personal)
    iPhone 11 mini + 12 + ipad + watch SE (company paid)
    Tv -55" samsung paid 1200

    So

    Computer > phone > TV

  • +1

    hookers > coke > food

    • You don't drink Coke with your food?….sorry I mean you don't snort coke with your hookers? ๐Ÿ˜…

  • TV $3K, phone $1.5K, laptop (free)

  • +1

    Computer #1 as it's basically a TV but 100x better.13700k/3080ti/DDR5
    Phone #2 Pixel 7 pro
    No TV because computer

  • +1

This entirely depends on how often you replace each device doesn't it?

I forget how much m TV cost, might have been $3k about 7 years ago. However in that time I have bough 3 phones and the price would be about the same (one was grey market and died after 12 months, one lasted 3.5 years and then died and had another for 3 years and counting).

If I were to buy all 3 today brand new today I would probably be TV, then computer, then phone.

  • I spend most time on my phone so phone gets budget priority. The PC is a 5-7yr old system I usually salvage from work so it's basically free, but I do spend good money on tripple screen setup. I don't spend much time on TV so the cheapest LG/Sony/Hisense 75" will do. Also this TV is once off for most people if you are lucky it doesn't die after warranty.

  • 1 x Gaming PC and peripherals $1700ish
    1 x Phone $1000
    1 x TV $300

Can work and be useful on the PC and phone needs to be fast and useful, tv is only entertainment, anything 50 inch and above with 4k is fine.

  • Phone 1st given the amount of time I spend with it and laptop a close 2nd just because a laptop cost more to get to decent specs. Decent TVs are just a few hundred even for a big screen when you don't need the absolute best picture quality so we spend the least on this even though we use it daily.

  • Car

  • Phones shouldnt this expensive…it just just insane some phone costs more than a laptop.

    • If you don't mind slightly older models you can still get flagship-class (or close to flagship) devices in the $500 range.

E.g Pixel 6a and Moto Edge 20 Pro

The downside of getting older devices is that you're giving up maybe 1 or 2 years worth of software and security updates.
