New Cameras in Melbourne

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqJyvkY_MNg
and the nanny state just gets more worrying
how are these mobile phone cameras even calibrated? if I use the in-built radio in my car will it pick up on that?
if my car is in park and I use my mobile phone, will I get pinged by the camera?

Is there an ozbargain pay system to give extra negs?

    • +1

You just have to download OzBargain Premium™ from the Google Play Store. It costs about $4.20. Watch out for OzBargain Perineum, it's a much different user experience and comes with ads

Good! I hate missing a right-turn light because some (profanity) in front of me is scrolling Instagram when the arrow goes green!

  • I see way too many people on the road looking down at their phone or distracted. i think we need them as i dont want to be hit by someone because they cant stop using their phone.

  • +1

Damn … No more handies while driving. Is there a jamming device you can install in the car so the nanny state can stop spying on you.

Stay tuned for social credit system courtesy CCP Australia.

Totally surprising that the same OP who complained about speed enforcement is absurd in Aus would post something like this.

Very simple - don't use the mobile phone while you're driving. It's not rocket science.

Do you really think they'll fine you for those imaginary scenarios you described 'what if I pull over to the service lane and put my car in park and use my phone but get caught?'.

This is just a what-if scenario to make it look like these cameras are just there to catch people out in some really silly scenarios.

    • if the governent includes predicted budget from camera revenue, why do you think it's about safety and not revenue?

      • +3

Why do you think it isn't both?

We need to stop idiots playing with their phone while driving, we may as well get money out of them while we are at it.

      • Because they've read the forums and realised there are still people like you

  • So, hypothetical question time.

As I'm travelling past a phone detection camera I happen to put on my sunglasses because of the glare, bright sun etc etc. I reach down and grab my glasses case which happens to be rectangular and black.

The photo is reviewed by a human and they see something that looks like a phone.

    What are your options here?

This is why cameras are a bad idea
      Australian government is a disgrace

    • You get a fine with no real way to defend yourself.

    • In this unlikely scenario (if it's sunny I'll already have them on) I would contest the fine and present the case as evidence. You would have to be very unlucky as the proportions are quite different to a phone at most angles and the case would be open within a couple of seconds, no longer resembling a phone at all.

  • I believe in NSW as long as the car is stationary and parked (e.g. not in a traffic lane) then it's OK

but when you are in a traffic lane you may not hold the phone in your hand - not sure about touching on your lap

  • how are these mobile phone cameras even calibrated? if I use the in-built radio in my car will it pick up on that?

They are manually reviewed if anything is detected.

if my car is in park and I use my mobile phone, will I get pinged by the camera?

Nope. They are on highways or between intersections where you can't stop.
As a side note, if you are in traffic you still are not allowed to pull out your phone even if the vehicle is in park.

  • I get people saying things like 'well, don't speed then!'

But do you guys draw the line anywhere on excessive fines?

e.g. what if it was $1,000 fine for 1km/h over the limit?

I don't know of any other countries so expensive and with such little tolerance than Victoria, Australia. 3km/h over, $150+ fine

    • +2

our speed limits are too low as well
if the speed limits were reasonable and matched the 85th percentile then "don't speed" would be a valid argument

      • Probably the one argument from you that actually makes a little bit of sense. Otherwise thought this entire thread was troll thread.

30kmph speed limits zones with speed bumps literally on top of speed bumps. The push for all 70kmph to become 60kmph, and 60kmph to 50kmph. While driving in other states, the speed limits in other states seem more sensible to me.

I'd support ways to identify, report and punish aggressive or dangerous driving. While absolutely do not condone 'speeding' but definitely see a reasonable case to increase speed limits on a case-by-case basis.

    • By $150+ you meant to say $227.

    • +4

      Should be even higher.

Then I get better government services without having to pay an extra cent in taxes.

  • If you hate living in a nanny state my advice would be to get out of Melbourne (or any major city) and move to a small regional area with less population and surveillance.

    • Yeah nah. Small regional places don't need rent lowerers and wannabe anarchists disrupting their lives.
International travel is fully open again. That's how to escape the 'oppression' of this "alleged Gulag backwater".

Here's a thought - everyone should drive around with OG Nintendo Gameboys (or similar electronic device resembling a phone) in their hand. It will confuse and overwhelm the detection system. Millions will be contesting the fines in court.

The rules are expanded from mobile phones and visual display units to cover:

      Portable devices (unmounted mobile phones, tablets);
      Wearable devices (smartwatches, wearable heads-up display);
      Inbuilt devices (Information, navigation, and entertainment systems, heads-up display that is an inbuilt part of the vehicle);
Mounted devices (Heads-up display, tablet, mobile phone, media player etc if securely mounted in or on a vehicle); and
      Motor bike helmet devices.

I really like this way of raising government revenue.

    It's a tax on morons.

  • +1

Good!!! If I had a dollar for every person I see on a daily basis using their mobile phone while driving without even trying to hide it…

  • +2

Jesus, this thread is a trip.

On one hand I’m a bit apprehensive about the cameras, but on the other hand I see SO MANY morons using their phones while driving. Something’s gotta give.

  • +2

Great news, I was kind of hoping the fine would be at least $1000 at least if you are using your phone whilst driving because people just don't care. Every week driving to and from work I have someone on the wrong side of the road coming towards me whilst playing with their phone. Looking forward to hearing those doing this still sooking about being caught.

The reason so many people accept the so-called nanny state is that we actually have a fairly good balance of freedom and safety. Try to swim nude on a Malaysian beach or catch Winnie the Pooh in a Chinese cinema. Wander through the streets of Rio with a nice watch, be black in Louisiana or denounce war in Moscow. Life down under is pretty sweet.

  • As an occasional cyclist I would like to see the punishment for mobile use in the car include community service in a trauma ward as well as $1000+ fines.

All you brainwashed speed kills aussies should watch this

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RTWaLA7M18M

Cruising on the autostrada in Poland at 160-170
    Perfect lane discipline
Poland's road fatality rate is barely worse than ours yet they cruise way faster on freeways
Come on guys, don't be foolish enough to believe everything the government says about speeding

    • +1

Thats cause they can drive… and the roads are maintained… You could run the AU MX championships on the Western Port FREEWAY in Melb..

Also people in AU are shit drivers only taught to pass their test, not taught how to drive… no way I'd trust most to travel beyond current speed limits, and some of them struggle at that.

      • many roads are rubbish in the eu

        • +2

Just like all of your comments are rubbish, yet here we are.

      • This, except for well maintained roads. Uk (admittedly not in the Eu now) roads are terrible. Old, narrow, potholes from freezing and constantly wet. Yet there is reasonable road discipline and good driver training. Also, there isn't so much of a competition to have the biggest truck possible to intimidate others and cause maximum damage in a crash.

So in Australia, it's assumed that your moronic driving in your double cab Ute wrapped in bullbars is going to cause a crash, hence you are forced to drive slow and be monitored for things like using mobile phones

What happens if I’m caressing my Rolex Daytona while waiting at the lights and the camera thinks I’m using an Apple Watch?! Will I get a fine??!

  • Worst Troll thread of the week.

What forum was the OP kicked off to make them bore us all here? One track note based on OP’s history.

      • Status: In the penalty box

        Oh wow, you weren't kidding.

      • Have to laugh at all the posts hidden for trolling. Whirlpool mods must be in cahoots with Big Traffic Camera.

  • Hello comrade !!!!

Does anybody really believe that the troll farms from former communist countries are just to promote that country? They are way more subtle than that, they have to prove that democracy (aka government is bad) is not working hence …. why not have a totalitarian leader that "can get shit done"? So when you see a new post that is just done to make people argue and saw division… just say "hello comrade !!!".

Really… what are the chances that he is not from there?

    • I think you overestimate the grey matter involved here .

If your logic is true, then Trump must be Xi's bestie and accomplice. He has completely destroyed America , albeit without firing a single shot. And we will go down on the same sinking (stinking) ship, if he wins again.
The way things are going in the West, China and Russia don't need to do anything. But to give them credit for our stupidity, apathy , gullibility and greed is something even Hollywood's highest paid scriptwriters couldn't fabricate.
That swamp Trump was talking about draining? It's happening. Clearly he is the biggest bacteria in it.

What happens if I'm holding a photograph of a mobile phone? 😂

    • In your driveway or out of it?
