Looking to Buy Arcade (MAME) Machine

Hi all :)

It's been a dream of mine to buy a decent Arcade machine with top quality sticks and buttons. Some of the ones I've found range between $2,200 and $2,800… Found a bunch on Facebook Marketplace but I'd rather buy something new from a reputable seller. I'm in Melbourne.

Thank you :)

  • Couldn't you just get the control board and use any computer and any display?

I thought these ones looked alright

You can get it as bar top style, or get the stand for it to make it like a stand up to play type setup. Or you can get 2 player arcade control layouts that hook to tv with the ‘guts’ contained without the controlller. They have the sanwa joystick option upgrade but nothing about the buttons. Located in vic.

When it comes to buttons and stick there's only 1 brand to buy Sanwa . I haven't done this for years so might be out of date.
build your own and use Retropie or similar and use that hardware

You can download ROMs I got one already configured with about 20,000 MAME roms from Atari to late.
If you couldn't be bothered Pandoras box I bought one in 2018 never use it same as the raspberry pie but cheap and easy till you get sick of it.

There are rip off copies of Pandoras box too with cheaper sticks, buttons and CPU so look out

    • Thats the brand! Sanwa! Cheers.

  • Thanks everyone. I've got a retropie and even a gaming laptop with RetroArch (even have it running on my Xbox Series X) but theres a certain charm with a full cabinet standing up and playing Street Fighter lol

    • There are web sites with plans everything you need to build a cabinet. You just need the tools and materials.

      • Also the skill! I cant even have a picture on the wall :p

"If you don't have metal stucco lath…"
        "Uh huh?"
        "Use carbon fibre stucco lath!"
        "D'oh!"

  • Do you want a kit or a turnkey mame cabinet? If you google you will find a number of places in OZ that sell them and one or two in Melb. Gumtree usually has a few as well.

Second hand real arcade machines converted will in most cases be more realistic for what you want and may last longer.

  • Do you want to be able to put coins in it?

    • Nah, freebies for the family :)

I know some people with real pinball or arcade machines sometimes keep a pile of coins next to it so people can just play. I know you can disable the requirement for coins on real machines, but I think the idea is putting in a coin is more authentic. You could probably make the coin fall through but still count too.

        • I love this idea!

  • I built a MAME cabinet some years ago with a mate. We both built our cabs at the same time, which massively sped things up (especially problem solving). The building itself only took about two days, and that includes mounting the 4:3 48cm TVs we bought from JB HiFi (I think they were 48cm, but they may have been 52cm). We built the actual cabs out of MDF and they were HEAVY. For the controls we soldered Sanwa buttons to the guts of a couple of old Xbox controllers, now that I recall, patched to an old Xbox running emulators (from memory).
