HID/Xenons for car

Hi all,

Been doing a bit of research on HID/Xenons, want to upgrade my car (1999 civic)headlights to some BRIGHT lights.

I realise it's very shady on the legal side, what do you guys think AND also do you recommend buying from overseas or does anyone know a good seller (and installer) here ? I'm in sydney,NSW.

Cheers

  • You can legally fit HID headlights IF
    1. The headlight assembly is specificaly designed for HID lamps and is ADR approved as such.
    2. There is either a self leveling mechanism in the headlight or the vehicle has self leveling suspension
    3. There is a washer system of the correct type fitted to the headlights.
    4. All headlights must be correctly aimed.

for the love of god, if you decide to ignore the above 4 points PLEASE adjust them so they're level and pointing down. Otherwise you blind everyone else on the road

    • yep definitely got that in mind already, i also hate people who blind.

sorry as i'm not really a car-person BUT : as per point 1, does "headlight assembly" mean the whole headlight itself (ie remove existing, fit in new one) + the lamp ? So then that means as long as i buy a 'full set' of headlights rather than just the lamp then it fulfills point 1, is this how you interpret it ?

      • Im not sure to be honest, try a car forum

  • I am of the understanding that you also need a completely new electrical system for your headlights to install HID.

    • as far as i'm aware you add a little inverter thingo.

      • unplug the power connection from the headlight assembly, plug that in to the ballast, plug the wire from the ballast in to where you unplugged the power from, replace the globe with the HID, done.

      From warwick's link below

It's so the HID's draw more power when they light the bulbs, and sometimes a car's wiring cant supply enough juice.

Given your Civic would have been built to a budget, I'd be cautious about using the stock wiring..

your 99 civic has reflecting head lights.. where as cars that do normally come with HID headphones they have projecting head lights
reflectors as the name states just reflects all light onto the incoming traffic where as projectors project at a certain angle and degree where oncoming drivers are put into consideration

    • cheers that clears up projector/reflector !

  • The headlight also need self levelling and washer to be compliant. That would be too much hassle and you'll probably attract cops in roadblocks

    • This. If nothing else it is obvious at a glance that the headlights are not stock and the car would not have come with them. Even if you do everything to be fully compliant, I'd still expect it to be a cop magnet.

    • yeah, that occurred to me too………

i just want bright, clear lights dammit ?!

the best and cheapest thing you can do is get those Philips Xenon bulb

they just replace your bulbs for that white light you like

however they wont be as good as a true ballast/projector replacement but they're not illegal
