Samsung Ativ Laptop Not Starting

Hey guys! I have a 10 year old Samsung Ativ 9 laptop which suddenly died on me. I thought it might have been the battery and i ordered a new one and installed it. Laptop worked for few hours and then died again.

As far as i remember the battery power indicator in Windows showed more than 60% and charging so the battery should have juice in it.

When I plug in the charger, the charging indicator led shows it's charging and if full turns green. I have checked with the multimeter that both of the battery and charger should be in good working order. I emphasize, should lol

I'd love to be able to fix the laptop, so I'd anyone has some good ideas I'd love to hear them?

I have also tried to plug the SSD via USB to another laptop but it must be initialized, prefer not to do that as I'm afraid I'll lose the data (i was lucky enough to backup most whilst the laptop was working for few hours on the new battery) but there might still be something stored that is good to keep but not critical. If I would initialize the SSD I could potentially restore everything with restore software, but I'd really prefer to fix the laptop if there is a way. And initializing a SSD sounds way too permanent and causes stress :P

I could buy another 2nd hand Ativ laptop but closest available is in USA with $200+ postage :(

  • Does it turn on with the battery removed?

    • No it doesn't. I cannot recall if the charging indicator led shows what colours if i try to turn on without the battery.

  • You can see if the DC jack is actually getting power? Sometimes they get loose and don't make contact anymore.

    • That's a good idea, i will double check that. I was just thinking everything was working fine as the charging leds indicated as normal and Windows showed battery charging.

I'll check later and report back :)

    • I'm pretty sure power is going in, did a clean but still nothing. The battery light indicators work as they should but nothing's happening.

It could be that the laptop is unable to charge the battery although the charging light is working as it should.

  • Get up from your chair, close all windows including the car, and th…

Check for error codes on restart.

Try removing battery, plug in charger and start.

Run sfc.exe, msconfig etc. Virus/trojan, malware scan, etc.

    • There is nothing on the screen, the fans have a quick twirl when I press power and that's it. The blue light comes on indicating the power is on. Currently the battery light showed green initially and then orange for charging.

It has something to do with the battery/power as i said earlier the laptop worked for few hours after I swapped the new battery in. Once I pull the plug the battery indicator shows briefly red meaning extreme low power. How ever if i keep the power plugged in the laptop the orange light turns green indicating full battery.

      I really don't know what's going on :D

      • Can you make sure the ram is actually seated correctly?

        • The memory is soldered on the motherboard.

I'm just wondering should I purchase another charging brick in case mine is faulty. I did measure mine with a multimeter and sparks did fly lol so I didn't get a good reading but I assume the charger works :P

I have scavenged Gumtree and ebay for a local Ativ laptop but I guess my model is rare to find in Australia.

          • @datafellows:

I did measure mine with a multimeter and sparks did fly lol

Wait what, that's not meant to happen

            • @deme: You are supposed to have grips for the multimeter to spread the power (larger contact area) and I just had the probes where the contact surface is too small to handle such large load (according to a YouTube video).
