Connecting a Third Monitor

Hey guys,

Currently i have 2 monitors connected to a NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT graphics card, this only has 2 DVI inputs. My computer is quite old now and could do with an upgrade, but i just got given a third monitor and was wondering what my options are to try and connect it? cause a DVI splitter just mirrors the image? is it time i just replaced the graphics card?

Thanks Guys.

  • Get yourself a ATI Radeon 6850.
It can support up to three screens, and this internet tells me it's the best price-to-performance card out there.

  • does the motherboard have onboard graphics?

otherwise, if you've got a spare slot you could put in another cheap video card for an extra 2 monitors

    • No the motherboard doesn't have onboard graphics. There is a spare slot, so maybe i'll look into a cheap graphics card or even just replace the current one. Thanks guys.

      • this wont work -you are essentially trying to do dual video cards. if the cards are not compatible and you don't have PCIe, you wont get it to work.

    • Not sure if it's the same with all computers, but mine doesn't let me enable the onboard graphics when I have a graphics card installed.

  • The simplest option is a USB video adapter, but they are very slow. OK for basic browsing/documents through.

    Otherwise, what other people said.

  • just get a new card that supports 3 monitors - see the most recent forum at whirlpool - http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1959798

  • My work PC has three monitors - It's got a NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT (with two monitors connected - one DVI and one VGA) and a NVIDIA GeForce 210 (with the third monitor connected via DVI).

I'm not really a hardware person but I think you should be able to just put another graphics card in your computer, as long as you have a free PCI Express slot.
