Purchasing Giftcards with Westfield EFTPOS Giftcard?

I got a Westfield Eftpos from school that I unfortunately can't use online (there's an online capable giftcard apparently. Is there a way to purchase a visa gift card from coles/woolies with my normal Westfield one? Or is there any other way to convert?

I believe you can use it outside Westfield, it is just an eftpost gc, just give it a try!

    • I did use it on other stores already, but I'm hoping to use it to buy something from Amazon

Is there a specific reason you are looking for a prepaid Visa/Mastercard gift card rather than an Amazon gift card?

Coles, BIG W and ALDI sell Amazon gift cards1, and you should be okay to use a Westfield EFTPOS gift card to pay for Amazon gift cards at those stores. The relatively high purchase fees for prepaid Visa/Mastercard gift cards also make it more sensible to just get an Amazon gift card.

In terms of Amazon gift card denominations, if I remember correctly…

        • Coles sells the $50, $100 and $30-$500 denominations.
        • BIG W sells $100 and $30-$500 denominations.
        • ALDI sells the $100 denomination (and possibly the $50 denomination, but it has been a while since I have been in an ALDI).

If you are insistent on getting a prepaid Visa/Mastercard gift card, let me know and I will give you more advice.

        1. A small number of Ampol service stations also sell Amazon gift cards (only $30, $50 and $100, from what I have seen), but these service stations are so few and far between, I think it is safe to ignore them…

        • Thank you for your helpful comment! I picked the visa card specifically since I haven't checked out any other card with like the prepaid functionality for online purchases. Would there be another card to check out for?

          • @Daftg: If you want to use a Westfield EFTPOS gift card to purchase a gift card to be used on Amazon, you only have two options:

            1. Purchase an Amazon gift card at a brick and mortar retailer
            2. Purchase a prepaid Visa/Mastercard gift card at a brick and mortar retailer

I already talked about 1, so let’s look at 2.

            Coles

Coles sells two types of prepaid Visa/Mastercard gift cards:

            • Coles Mastercard gift cards ($50 + $5 purchase fee, $100 + $5 purchase fee, $250 + $7 purchase fee)

            • Vanilla Visa gift cards ($25 + $3.95 purchase fee, $50 + $4.95 purchase fee, $100 + $5.95 purchase fee, $250 + $7.50 purchase fee, $400 + $9.95 purchase fee)

You should be fine using a Westfield EFTPOS gift card to pay for them, as I am not aware of any BIN1 blocks that Coles has implemented on Westfield EFTPOS gift cards. Coles implements BIN blocks on other prepaid gift cards (e.g. Vanilla Visa gift card, Coles Mastercard gift card, Coles Gift Mastercard) when you try to use them to pay for some other gift cards in their stores.

One more thing to note: the only type of split payments you can do at a Coles self checkout when purchasing a gift card is cash first, then one EFT payment (in your case, the Westfield EFTPOS gift card). If you want to use more than one EFT payment (i.e. more than one card) to pay for your gift card, you must go to a standard checkout (operated by a dedicated staff member) and hope they are happy for you to do split payments and use a Westfield EFTPOS gift card as a payment method. (Some are not, so you have been warned.)

            Woolworths

Woolworths sells two types of prepaid Visa gift cards:

            • OnlyONE Visa gift card ($50 + $5.95 purchase fee, $100 + $5.95 purchase fee, $20-$500 + $7.95 purchase fee)

            • Activ Visa gift card ($20-$500 + $7.95 purchase fee)

There are actually OnlyONE Visa gift cards and Activ Visa gift cards sold at Woolworths with no purchase fee, but those are restricted to specific merchant types (e.g. restaurants, hardware stores) and are unlikely to be redeemable at Amazon, so avoid them if you can.

It was okay to use Westfield EFTPOS gift cards to pay for OnlyONE Visa gift cards in early 2022, but I suspect that may no longer be the case, because Woolworths has since implemented BIN blocks on more prepaid gift cards (e.g. Perfect EFTPOS gift cards, Activ Visa gift cards) when you try to use them to purchase some gift cards at Woolworths (e.g. WISH gift cards, OnlyONE Visa gift cards, Perfect EFTPOS gift cards).

Split payments when purchasing gift cards are possible at self and standard checkouts.

            BIG W

I mention BIG W, as they are generally more relaxed with BIN blocks than Woolworths. They only sell Activ Visa gift cards ($50 + $5.95 purchase fee, $100 + $5.95 purchase fee, $200 + $5.95 purchase fee, $25-$500 + $7.95 purchase fee or $50-$500 + $7.95 purchase fee).

Much like Woolworths, split payments when purchasing gift cards are possible at self and standard checkouts.

My suggestion is to purchase an Amazon gift card for the exact amount you want to spend on Amazon, rather than a prepaid Visa / Mastercard gift card, because:

            • The purchase fee can be quite steep for prepaid Visa / Mastercard gift cards sold at brick and mortar retailers.

            • There is a chance that Amazon’s payment processor will reject the prepaid Visa / Mastercard gift card you are trying to use. The issue is that prepaid Visa / Mastercard gift cards are unverified (and unverifiable) Visa / Mastercard cards, because they are not tied to a specific person whose identity was verified before the card was issued. This means that they are more likely to be involved in fraudulent transactions than a regular debit/credit card, and some merchants have a low tolerance for this kind of risk. Amazon is generally fine with people using prepaid Visa / Mastercard gift cards as a payment method on their platform, although I have seen a few anecdotes on this website from people who had Amazon reject their prepaid Visa / Mastercard gift card.

            1. Bank identification number, which refers to the first 6-8 digits of the card number.

@WookieMonster: That's quite helpful! thank you again

            • @WookieMonster: Hi there, can I ask if it's still fine to buy a prepaid card at Cole's with a Westfield gift card? You see like the expert on this. Cheers!

              • @AndyY: The last time I tried was a couple of months ago, and I did not run into any errors. However, who knows whether something has changed within the last couple of months!

@WookieMonster: Hey, thank you for your response. I went to Coles this morning and can confirm it still works!
