Accomodation in Singapore

hi, I will be going to singapore in october with hubby and 2 kids (7 and 3) flying scoot. I am trying to find decent 4star accomodation for around $120-150/night but unable to find anything on wotif and hotels.com. Does anyone have any advice regarding family accomodation in singapore? any other travel advice is also welcome

You're dreaming. If you do find anything it will be in a terrible location

You're not going to find anything decent (if any) for that price. Decent hotels (good location and service) in Singapore are usually $200+ a night after you include service tax.

Grand Mecure Roxy pointed out above is slightly out of your budget after you include tax. Not to mention it's got average reviews on Tripadvisor and is in a crap location (very isolated out near the airport) with poor access to the MRT train lines.

From my experience, a lot of those "discount" hotel booking websites are a total waste of time and don't include tax/surcharges in their advertised price so they seem cheaper - once you add on tax and various surcharges, you get the same price or even higher than booking direct.

I find it a lot easier and cheaper to book direct with the hotel, especially when a promo is on. e.g. Hilton hotels recently had a 30-40% off prepay promotion going on, and the rates easily beat anything you could find on the booking websites by a good 20% or more. Obviously you take the risk with upfront payment and no refunds, but IMO the savings outweigh the risk (and sometimes your travel insurance policy will cover you anyway).

How many nights are you going?

I was in Singapore for a long weekend with my 2 children and decided to lash out (it was the last 2 nights of a 2 week Asia trip…)

Stayed at the Marina Bay Sands for $300 a night - an amazing hotel and plenty to keep you occupied for a day's worth on its own…

Singapore is almost on par with Australia for average prices - and in some cases more expensive. It is not a bargain destination - that would be Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok

    • Agreed. If you've ever had to buy a round at a pub in Singapore, you'd adjust your thinking very quickly.

      $18 for a Gin and Tonic…yowch

I'm going next week with Scoot. I booked the fare in March and the room last month with Accor when they had a 50% off sale. Decided to lash out and paid $200/night for executive suite (includes breakfast, free canapes, cocktails daily in their lounge) at Clarke Quay, but they also have deals where up to 2 kids stay free. Last time I was there got a deal at the Hilton on Orchard Rd but it's worth checking the hotel sites themselves as they often have in house specials and also cheaper if you book 45 days ahead.
The public transport is pretty good so check out the hotels on train/bus lines because depending on how old the kids are they are going to get tired easily in the heat and humidity. The Zoo has little airconditioned huts to cool down between visits to the animals! The bird park at Jurong is worth a visit.
When you book check the rates in AUD as the AUD=SGD1.30 so it could look more expensive. They also charge bed taxes so look at what it really will cost.
Food is great and the hawkers stalls are cheap. It's a very clean place and the one thing that is a no no is chewing gum-so don't let the kids have any.
    Other than that -enjoy :)

    • Bluesby09, you got a very good deal for an executive suite with all the inclusions. I will keep an eye out for something like that

  • Thanks everyone. I will probably have to increase my budget then. I have been able to score some pretty good accomodation deals in Gold Coast and even Melbourne before and I was thinking Singapore cannot be more expensive than Aus, but looks like it is!

    • I think accommodation is more expensive because of the price premium on space. ^^" But you'll find a lot of other things (food, public transport, some shopping) are cheaper. :) :)

Chewing gum is not that bad, just don't litter anything anywhere. I'd never seen anyone actually get fined for gum or littering, but good to keep the place clean anyway.

And sorry, I don't know about 4-star hotels. ^^" My parents stayed at V Hotel once (3.5star) and thought it was okay (very very close to the MRT station); I'm opting to stay at Moon Hotel (also 3.5star) for my coming trip.

Have also stayed at Ibis Bencoolen (3star). Nice and close to Bugis but seems really expensive nowadays ($160+?) so I picked something different for next trip. :)

  • Even the crappiest accomodation, even if next to a brothel, will be safe.

I'm going in less than 2 weeks. I got 5 nights at the Intercontinental (5 stars) for $192 a night using the Zuji 15% off voucher. I also got 1 night including 2x buffet breakfast at Marina Bay Sands for $360ish on a Sat night using Otel and their 10% off Facebook deal. I picked my Mum up 2 nights at the Swissotel The Stamford for well under $200 a night using Zuji as well. There are deals, you just need to be patient, keep an eye out and exhaust all the different booking sites. Good luck.

  • I always transit through SGP for a cheaper desination cause hotel so crazy expensive in SGP.

Once cause everything booked up, it was cheaper for me to fly in KUL and stay thre then staying in SGP for one night!

Tiger and airasia can get you out of SGP cheap

  • try this.
