Toyota Corolla 2023 Rust Issue

About 12 days ago, I purchased a Toyota Corolla 2023 model.

Lately, I have observed some rust spots on it, which could possibly be due to the changing weather in Sydney and the excessive dew. I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this issue and if so, what options do I have?

While purchasing they wanted me to opt paint protection, but I wasn't convinced since it is a new car. This is the first time I am seeing this issue. I do have other two vehicles and they are perfectly fine.

Take it to the dealership /end thread.

Where are the rust spots? If it's on the brake rotors, it's normal.

If they're anywhere else, it's a problem. Take it back to the dealer.

  • +6

    You don't need paint protection.

We would need to see a photo, but it would be very unusual for rust to appear in only 12 days. It's more likely that you picked up some iron oxide in the rain from just driving around, or possibly when it was being shipped.

If the rust washes off with a towel exposing the paint under you should have nothing to worry about.

iron oxide is rust :) . still shouldn't happen on a new car.

      • So, where are the photos of these rust spots on an allegedly brand new car?

  • -5

rust started on - doors, fuel cap, random spots i would say.

    • That definitely doesn't sound normal!

I would be very surprised to see rust on a 12 day old car though. If it is actually rust, it'll have to be coming from underneath the paint, so unless it was damaged during delivery (which, apparently, is very common) and not repaired properly or something (by the dealer)…

    • Is it just dirty rain??

      • could be, but my other 2 old cars still don't show any signs of rust

  • wax on wax off.

is this a new car? or a demo?

a family member purchase a used car(3 year old car) from someone who had lived near the beach. As you mentioned there was rust everywhere. Inside the engine bay. He was quote 5k to have it repaired but only after it was strip apart to determine how much damage/rust there was.

    • it is a new car

Then what's stopping you from driving the car back into the dealership front window?

        • i am going to do that.

    • Corrosion then.

  • Why havent you already taken it to the dealer and spat the dummy at them?

Mate has a few year old Fortuner (from memory) and they are replacing all the doors on his due to a 'known' issue. no questions asked… he was shocked, expected a battle.

edit: with the 60,000 cars supposed to be stuck on ships off the coast, I'd say this will become more of an issue….

    • Manufactured in Jan23 , delivered in march .

      • and why are you not at the dealership now being all pissed off?

        • i got it booked for first service so will talk to them.

          • @usmani4all: when you picked the car was the rust there?

            • @godofpizza: nope, it was pretty clean. first i noticed when i went for fueling and saw rust on fuel panel.

          • +5

@usmani4all: there's nothing a service is going to fix that. You should be returing the car ASAP.
If you have a accident your insurance may not cover you.

12 days not 12 years. That should obviously not happen no matter how much dew or rain there has been. Talk to the dealer!

OzB demands photos. Where are they?

    • +2

      MS Paint politely requested.

How is it rusting already? I've had mine two months (built in December 2022) and even with the chip in the bonnet that hasn't rusted (and I'm also in Sydney). What colour, body and trim did you get?

  • +3

    pictures?

  • +1

You sure its rust? Or bird poo?
My 10+ year Japanese car got chips and cracks but no rust.

    • This- I'm in Melbourne, but if it hasn't rained in a while around here, the first rain is full of red dust that looks like rust (or, if in a blue birdbath, blood). It's coming from factories and a garden gravel place like that a couple of suburbs off. Had a bad run recently and it turns out the local garden centre moved their giant pile of red garden gravel

Soap it off and see, it may take a bit of rubbing cause that stuff is sticky. No soap off, straight to the dealer

Has anyone been doing building work near where you park? Could be fine particles from angle grinding or metal cutting. If fine steel particles land on the paint, they're going to oxidize = rust spots.

    • I managed to do that to my own car, mild cut and polish sorted it out
      .

    Photos or it didnt happen

      Agree. Useless thread without pictures.

OP will probably share their VIN before they upload a blurry wide angle photo taken with a potato.

      FFS

  • Pics of feet.. i mean rust

  • What kind of rust spots? Discolouration of the paint but still smooth? Rough sections of paint with brown colour like something stuck on the car? Actual damaged paint showing bare metal?

My 2yo car had a bunch of brown ‘rust spots’ on the bonnet. Was after a very dewy morning that I parked under some gum trees. I’m reasonably certain it was tannins from the trees that stained the paint. Required some pretty heavy handed polishing to get it off as I didn’t realise and it ended up baking in the sun all day. It probably would have hosed straight off if I got it before it dried.

  • Photos??

Is it a white car? and your other two cars weren't white? Pretty likely to be rail dust Put a drop of Bowden's Own Wheely Clean on a cotton bud and dab the rust spot. It'll turn purple and then wash off with copious amounts of water.

  • That is a warranty issue.Close thread!

    • +2

It won’t be a warranty issue if it’s something that has landed on the car. That would be a cleaning issue.

  • Go all Karen on Dealers ass, and full Tik Tok Meltdown !

  • -1

the quality has gone downhill. i switched to mitsubishi and have a 10year warranty. just in time to switch to EV when they make it mandatory law to own an EV.

    • +3

It’s not a mandatory law to have one by 2035, they are simply trying to not sell them anymore. Petrol/diesel cars will still be commonplace for decades

  • +1

It wont be rust. Have you tried to wash it off? Do you have photos? Have you even touched it? Its most likely just needs a clean.

  • Still no photos…..

    Obviously still at dealer. Probably.

  • Photos please.
