DPreview Closing down and Being Wiped

They were a great place for reviews on camera gear

Phuck Amazon.

Dear readers,

After nearly 25 years of operation, DPReview will be closing in the near future. This difficult decision is part of the annual operating plan review that our parent company shared earlier this year.

The site will remain active until April 10, and the editorial team is still working on reviews and looking forward to delivering some of our best-ever content.

Everyone on our staff was a reader and fan of DPReview before working here, and we’re grateful for the communities that formed around the site.

Thank you for your support over the years, and we hope you’ll join us in the coming weeks as we celebrate this journey.

Sincerely,

Scott Everett
General Manager - DPReview.com

What’s the timescale?

The site will be locked, with no further updates made after April 10th 2023. The site will be available in read-only mode for a limited period afterwards.

Sad times. That site was BADDDD for my camera GAS circa 2010-2020 😅🔫

  • Man, I hope the site gets archived by people, such a wealth of deep information and comparison info. What a ruddy shame… Amazonnnnnnnn!!!

    • Agree…
But reading the 2930802398 comments it doesnt look like it will be.

few people have looked at buying it but it was no go…

Sounds like a job for the Wayback Machine

Did they say it was going to be wiped, or just locked?

Yeah maybe it will be wiped at some stage, but I didn't see a definite indication of that when I read it elsewhere.

Totally sucks that it's happening. It was the photography site that wasn't vapid crap.

  • Puk amazon. Probably bezoz need more profit to fly to the moon during long weekends

  • Ask sysadmins to dump it to torrents. It will be safe forever, and few mirrors will pop up.

  • That unfortunately happens to (and will happen to) many independent websites — they either die from obscurity, or get bought out by bigger company, and die later when not turning enough revenue.

Have you archived all of jv's posts for historical purposes?

      • +3

I believe they are continuously fed into large language models for the next iteration of jvbot.

  • They probably got a really good offer on the domain name.

  • Blaming Amazon is dumb

The standalone digital camera market is dying

If the market was going well and the need for a dedicated review site + forums was strong, the current team would do a management buyout and run the site themselves and rake in the independent cash

The fact this is not the case means outside of a few old school reviewers and YouTube, reviewing and talking about cameras full time does not pay the bills

I'm so sad about this one. For me, when I think about anything cameras (reviews, specifications, old camera gear, lens/camera/feature search, news & camera rumours, forum, IQ comparisons, camera manufacturer stories and industry announcements) my first port of call was dpreview as an all in one camera/photography online resource. It was a very functional website in that way but I can see how it simply wasn't generating enough cash. Oh well… friendship over with dpreview. Now OzB is my favourite camera discussion website.
