Recommendations for Plain / Basic Tees

I’m running out of basic (mostly white and light-grey) t-shirts as they’ve worn out over the years, so I need to get quite a few new ones.

What are everyone’s recommendations for plain basic t-shirts with respect to a combination of price/value, quality and fit?

+1 . I recently started stocking up the long line teeshirts, more expensive at $10 or so, but they cover pass your hips which i like for the casual look. Plus able to bend over without mooning everyone.

Kmart has their el cheapo tshirts, and the 'australian cotton' which is i think a few dollars more, i personally grab the aus cotton as it feels a bit nicer. and I mean whats $2 versus say $5 for abit of luxury haha.

Yes the $4.50 ones have been great and cheap enough to just buy a whole new set when required

      • I wouldn't really recommend either but IMO Big W $4.50 ones > Kmart $4.50 ones

KmartT-shirts from my experience lose their shape after the first couple of washes, especially around the neck and they end up looking like something a homeless person is forced to wear.

Not Big W $4.50 ones. I'm over 195cm tall, so got a bunch of XL for the length as they are all cotton (according to the label), to go under work coveralls.

Great the first time worn, but shrank about 4-5cm in length after first wash in a front loader on a 40 deg wash.

Gildan brand, they're widely available from ebay and well worth the extra cost; last for ages. They crap all over the extra thin rubbish with useless elastic collars of any of the usual retail stuff, even Bonds.

Gildan use US-sizing, so you normally need to go down two sizes from what you buy in Australia. Of course YRMV so maybe order one first to confirm.

    • Curious but where is Gildan from? Everytime I order 'custom tshirts' and sweats for gifts they come with Gildan brand. Even uniforms and other in person outfits seem to come from them. Do they provide cotton/materials to suppliers all round?

Have been trying to find a non gildan custom print tshirts place for some time now just as I aren't the biggest fan sometimes of the feel.

      • It's a US company, but my t-shirts are all made in Haiti.

It's a heavy-duty cotton, so can get a little rough after a while, so perhaps not for everyone?

They presumably have a big wholesale market to tshirt printing companies, hence why they're so widely available on ebay.

    • I bought a half dozen Gildan mixed colours for about $50 or so (On special) from Amazon. My "mistake" was buying a size larger thinking that they'd shrink as the Kmart etc ones do and then they'd fit after a few washes. They didn't shrink even after sticking them in the dryer a few times out of desperation.

      • Yep, I've seen no shrinkage at all in mine. It's one of the things I like about them, not having the belt line gradually creep up over multiple washes until it's a crop top.

    AS Colour

Are you referring to the colour brown?

    • Yep pick up sale tees for $5-10

    • yep my go to. good quality, holds shape and feels nice. worth the $ (check out the clearance section)

  • I’ve had Gilda’s before - they’re not bad

Recently ordered these Charles Wilson tshirts because they have a reinforced collar/neck and so far, they’re definitely a step up in quality.

  • Icebreaker. Expensive but way more comfortable than cotton and cotton/poly tees. Usually have a few good sales during the year and there's always the outlet

Looked them up cause I’ve never heard of them. I believe you but a bit too rich for my blood for a basic tee.

If I ever see them considerably discounted I’ll give them a try.

      $100+ for a t shirt 😂

Target basic Tees $10 each from memory miles better than Kmart ones

Uniqlo usually but these are on sale at the moment https://www.frenchconnection.com.au/sale/man/clothing/polos-… and for $10 are going to be pretty hard to beat

      Cheers just grabbed a few.

+1 Uniqlo from me as well. Certain tees from Kathmandu are decent but RRP are way overpriced so wait for their clearance + 20% off sale.

Uniqlo would be $8 and sometimes $5 for basic crew or v neck. They are fitted as well or you can look for regular. Sometimes they discount brand name or designer collabs to around this. Got a few anime shirts around $5 and $10. Target has supima cotton basics that were $5 when I bought them. You might get managers markdowns or clearance at Kmart, Big W or Target to get cheaper than $5.

  • I get the. AS colour staple T’s from EBay or the Amazon Essential T’s from Amazon. Both last well and are relatively cheap. The Amazon ones have a large variety of colours and styles.

  • I got sick of buying t-shirts from KMart, Target, etc as they always lost their shape around the neck after a few washes. I saw a half dozen black Hanes T-shirts on Amazon for $39 and took a chance. 12 months later they have kept their shape very well but the fabric is not as soft as I would like. My next purchase was 6 x Gildran mixed colour from Amazon and these are a softer blend and have kept their shape too. I think I paid about $50 or so dollars for these.
Both of these purchases were discounted. So not the regular price.

  • I bought four Tweed River T-shirts from Big W 20+ years ago. Obviously they weren't expensive.
I'm still wearing them to this day because they don't look any different.
They haven't faded or lost their shape and the fabric is so soft.
    They wash and dry beautifully.
I have no idea if the brand is still available but worth looking for.

    Blank Clothing
They don't offer free shipping from memory so probably more cost effective to buy in bulk.
They provide good sizing and gsm info of their tees so you get good idea what you'll be getting.
Price is not as competitive as they used to be, but inflation :/

The Gildan Ultracotton are my go-to Tshirts. Heavyweight, don't shrink and last for years. I had a Tshirt printing business for a while and was buying them from a guy in the US for a very good price (about $5 each for 20), but that was years ago, and the AUD-USD exchange rate was far better than now. Last ones I got for my own use were some years back from an Aust online vendor (Tshirt Blanks, or something like that), who now charge much more. I've been looking for an alternative vendor, but unable to find one at a decent price.

May I ask the folk here who buy from Amazon, do you mean Amazon US, or Amazon Aust? And if anyone could recommend a particular vendor for Gildan Ultracotton, would be much appreciative.

I'm also interested in the Hanes Beefy T, but again, can't find a vendor who sells small bulk amounts at a decent price.

    Cheers

Boody tees are smooth and comfy. I had uniqlo tees before but they feel a bit plasticy so I binned them. A bit more expensive but for something I wear so frequently, totally worth it imo.

In terms of longevity, I've had them for a year without issues or noticeable deterioration.

  • anything PROCLUB.

  • Rotate your wardrobe every day, air & sun the clothes regularly, don't use harsh detergent or heavy cycles or hot water when washing, never use a dryer. Helps clothing last longer. Treat them well.

If I was to buy more tee's in todays retail market, & if I wanted new, I'd probably go hemp/cotton or linen (about $50 a tee, or maybe brands like American Giant that do the staple tee in a variety of weights, but they are expensive when shipping to Australia is taken into account).

I'd also keep an eye out for secondhand/barely used items.
