Makeup Mirror Causes a Fire to My Bieber Hat inside My House

A few days ago during the morning rush to get the kids to school, my daughter noticed smoke coming from one of my boxes in the sunroom.

I immediately grabbed the Cotton On box full of 50c Bieber hats and Ford socks thanks to deals from here and put it outside the house. Investigating how the fire started I looked firstly for electrical cords and none were in that area. The hole in the box directed me to look at my wife's naughty make up mirror that was the only possible culprit to attempting to burn down my house. Simply reflecting the sun onto my box like a magnifying glass. With all the combustible items around that area and if no one was there I really think the house would have been a major bon fire.

I know this is rare way to start a fire but I was not aware of the dangers of that bloody portable make up mirror. I hope this weird story helps someone to check for possible magnifying dangers (mirrors, glasses, magnifying glasses etc.) that may be lurking in spots where the sun whacks your house. I will attempt to get photos up of the box involved the makeup mirror and the Bieber hat.

Edit: I was aware of sun causing fire from like a magnifying glass but was not actively looking it in my house for the danger.

You can ligh a fire with a concave mirror concentrating the sun's rays in one single spot.
The mith goes that in 212 BC Rome had laid siege to Syracuse. All seemed lost until the Sicilian mathematical genius Archimedes wheeled out a big round mirror. Using it and smaller mirrors to concentrate the sun's rays on the wooden ships, Archimedes managed to kindle a flame and incinerate the entire Roman fleet.

      • Not sure if Archimedes really burnt the roman fleet in 212bc. I wasn't there. It could well be a myth.
I am sure that you can lit a fire with a concave mirror or a magnifying glass.

        Yep, myth busted by Mythbusters.

Its theoretically possible in ideal circumstances, but wasn't practically possible then with the quality mirrors they had.

  • Thats why you should not leave bottled water in your car especially a glass one and park it in the sun…

Why did I even bother waking up today??

Is it just me or does it read like a sitcom full of oddly placed marketing product placements…

Makeup Mirror Causes a Fire to a Bieber Hat inside My House

A few days ago during the morning rush to get the kids to school, my daughter noticed smoke coming from one of the boxes in the sun room. I immediately grabbed the Cotton On box full of 50c Biebier hats and Ford socks, thanks to deals from here, and put them outside.

Investigating how the fire started, I first looked for electrical cords, but none were in that area. The hole in the box drew my attention to my wife's make up mirror, as the possible culprit, in the attempt to burn down my house. It was reflecting the sun onto my box and acting like a magnifying glass.

With all the combustible items in the area, I think the house could have suffered a major fire.

I know this is an usual way for a fire to start, but was not aware of the dangers of that bloody portable make up mirror.

I hope this story helps someone to check for possible dangers of magnifying objects that may be lurking in spots where they can reflect the sun's rays. I will attempt to post photos of the box involved, the make up mirror and the Bieber hats.

Edit : I was aware of the sun's rays causing fire by being magnified, but was not actively looking in my house for such danger.

Anyone want to help improve the post?

During the morning rush, my daughter did behold
Smoke from a box in the sunroom, we were told
I acted quickly, grabbed the Cotton On box
Full of Bieber hats and Ford socks, like a fox

Deals made it too hard to resist
But now it was outside, not to persist
I searched for cords, but found none
Then saw the hole, where smoke begun

The naughty make-up mirror, my wife's prized possession
Was the one, causing this burning obsession
It reflected the sun, like a magnifying glass
Directing its rays, onto the box, alas

      Combustible items, surrounded that space
A major bonfire, could have been the case
This rare way to start a fire, I must confess
I was not aware of this, I must address

To warn others of the magnifying glass
That could cause danger, as time does pass
Mirrors, glasses, magnifying tools and such
Check for dangers, it doesn't take much

I hope this story, though a little absurd
Will help someone, take heed of the word
And if you're interested, pictures will come
Of the box, the mirror, and the Bieber hat, for some fun

For those that cbf reading OP: A morning fire scare caused by a makeup mirror reflecting sunlight onto a box of combustibles prompted a warning about potential magnifying dangers in sunlit areas of homes.

Try doing the same for your own forum posts
