Big W - Can You Buy a Gift Card with a Gift Card?

Hi everyone

I stupidly bought a Big W Gift Card instead of a generic Woolworths Gift Card.

Is it possibly to use a Big W Gift card to purchase a Woolworths Gift card, or, a generic EFTPOS gift card?

Or, if there are any other tricks I can pull… I saw one forum thread that suggested you could buy something from Big W, then get it refunded onto a new WISH gift card…

And what did they say when you asked them first?

      thats too much common sense

  • Yes, the trick involves hassles. It may not worth it.

  • Fairly sure the answer is no.

There are quite a lot of good deals to be had at bigw now and then maybe just hold onto it?

    Not directly.

Feel free to give it a go, but you should be blocked from using BIG W gift cards from purchasing any gift cards at BIG W. I believe BIG W stopped this many years ago.

    • If you select Gift Card as a payment method at a self-service checkout and then you scan, swipe or enter a gift card, an Item Not Allowed error message will pop up on the EFTPOS terminal. A staff member will need to clear the error message before you can attempt to use another payment method.

    • If you go to a standard checkout and ask to pay using a Gift Card, you'll either be told "no" by the checkout operator, or the checkout operator will let you try and you will get the same error message as the one you get at self-service checkouts.

    • If you try to use Everyday Pay as a payment method for purchasing any gift cards at BIG W, you will get an Item Not Allowed error and you should be sent back to the regular payment screen (or, in one case I experienced, cause the checkout to become unresponsive). This is because Everyday Pay cannot be used to purchase any gift cards under any circumstances, even if there are no gift cards issued by Woolworths Group (e.g. Woolworths, WISH) added to the Everyday Pay wallet.

I see you are probably referring to this forum post, but I will reiterate that you may be given any sort of Woolworths Group gift card redeemable at BIG W as a refund (including a BIG W gift card, Returns gift card (redeemable at Woolworths and BIG W), Essentials gift card or WISH gift card) if you tell the service desk person that you no longer have the exact same gift card on you. I think the gift card you receive depends on the type of gift card(s) they have at the service desk. You could even say you have a gift card on you and present a WISH gift card to have the refund processed onto that, but that depends on whether the staff member actually looks at the last four digits of the gift card you presented to see whether it makes the last four digits on the receipt… and you would also need to present a gift card where the refund amount will not exceed the initial load amount, otherwise you will get an error message.

      Thank you, that's very helpful!

    • Now I know what the W stands for

  • So the discount was bigger on the bigw card and you were hoping to spend it at Woolworths.

    • Probably for OP. Personally, I don't mind redeeming EDR dollars @ Big W with 1% loss.
