Do You Only Eat Fish on Good Friday?

Why are we all still eating fish and chips on good friday? Tradition? Religious beliefs?

I thought in primary school that it was just a thing everyone did, so continued doing so until I realised I wasn't religious at all and stopped..

  • When I was a kid in a Catholic family my mum made us give up anything enjoyable on Good Friday. No computer games, no TV. Quite an annoying day for a nerd like me. Of course there was fish only that Friday.

It honestly surprised me that none of my classmates I talked to did anything similar. For them it was just a public holiday, and Fridays were just like any other day.

Now that I'm atheist I find the whole 'fish on Friday' thing to be peculiar and a bit bizarre, but if other people want to do it, good for them.

  • off topic:

if it's a mourning day, why is it named "good" Friday?

Not religious but don't eat meat on Good Friday just due to family tradition.

Will get fish and chips for dinner or have vegetarian food which is fine for one day.

  • If i get to the pearly gates, i dont think eating fish on a friday will be the deciding factor if i get in or not

I only eat fish/abstain from meat on Good Friday because my late grandmother always enjoyed the tradition and made sure we followed it. I do it to honour her memory.

I used to, which is funny because I don't like fish - I used to find alternative seafoods that I liked instead. I now realise following stupid rules has nothing to do with beliefs, it's how you live your life that counts.

  • I eat hot cross bums

  • As someone that used to work in a fish and chip shop throughout uni, and knows the hell of a Good Friday shift, I refuse to eat fish on good friday. Any other time, sure, Good Friday, nope.

  • Being Eastern Orthodox, I follow a lot of fasts' throughout the year, so it's easy enough.

  • Fish is good for you,

Get it from fish markets and eat it a few times a week.
