Suggestions for Spending Money for Renovation

Hi,

I'm owner building a home over the next 18 months. I have the funds available to me to fund.

I plan on spending at least 100K at bunnings.

200K on tradies, roof and wall trusses.

100K other supplies.

I also spend about 15K a year on medical appointments for my son.

I've not taken advantage of any credit card rewards. I have good credit. And earn just over 100K. Should I look to apply for multiple different credit cards to get rewards? I've also not used cash back offers, and probably should consider…

Should I consider a part-time/casual job at bunnings, and quickly buy all known items I need and discontinue job (i'm pretty time poor, but if I managed to get a staff discount on some key purchases it could be worth it.

I'd appreciate any insights.

Cheers,
Clinton

I'm also interested in this. My and GF are thinking about extending house in future. She reckons she will get individual builders/tradies to do different sections/jobs and we do what we can. But I told her the council wouldn't accept that. A certified builder needs to do the entire build based on a council-approved plan.

re. going with individual tradies - in the current climate, even if you get the owner-builder license to do that, it will take a great deal of time

Owner builder you can. You'll need to document and get it certified and insured if you sell within 7 years (at least in Victoria)

Just checking you’re applying for power pass for extra savings?

You seem pretty confident that they would actually hire you. Why not get a tradie to buy it all for you with their tradie discount?

Cos they’ll pocket the discount and charge him an additional 20% for “their troubles”

bunnings is not always the cheapest/best for bulk buying…

If you are looking at dropping $100k at Bunnings, look at getting the Bunnings Trade Card. Helps with online receipts and $ tracking. You only need ABN to apply.

If you combine Bunnings 30 day account with the credit card churn, in theory you'll have credit terms of roughly 60 days before paying.
You can settle Bunnings trade account via instore or online credit card payments. No surcharge for AMEX

I agree with comments about Bunnings pricing not being the lowest especially for big and bulk purchases. I guess you pay more for the convenience of being open late and on weekends. Returns policy is very good also.

In terms of sale items, generally its only on old and discontinued stock. The regular staples that tradies use are unlikley to be regularly discounted if you are after a particular colour/style.

  • Tradies will prefer cash or EFT so credit card no benefit but for the rest, yes, churn the cards just be aware of not doing it too much and having your credit score affected. I can’t remember what the max churn per year is to be safe but someone else can tell you to google.

The Bunnings discount is probably not worth the effort of working there (spend time with your son instead!!) and you don’t want to be locked into a particular supplier (which you will if you went to the effort of working there - you will want to buy everything from there even if it’s not the best option).

  • If you are going with getting the supplies from Bunnings, get a Flybuys Card!
