Honey Home Insurance Sensors

Hi all,

Old age relative has somehow joined Honey insurance. They have sent out these 3 sensors for water, smoke, motion thats controlled by sn App on your phone. He doesnt have a smart phone or Internet.

Can i setup these sensors using my phone? I don't know how they work as if the house has no internet, how can they notify you of an issue? Where do you put the water sensor, when you have multiple sources of water leaks.

Any ideas.

Thanks.

IOT devices require a permanent internet connection, not just a smart phone to operate. You use the mobile app to create an account and manage these devices but they still need a Wi-Fi network with internet access, or some kind of hub (using protocols like Z-wave, or Zigbee or Matter, which is also internet-connected) to work as intended.

  • Sensors need to be activated to get your Honey discount - is it enough to cover the cost of getting wifi?

Honey should have asked this before hand.

Sounds like grounds for cancellation and report them for predatory sales to the ombudsman.

Is this insurer even offering a discount? Just compared them for my home and contents and they came out 52% more expensive for same levels of cover, and yet they require sensors.

    • in my case, they came out as the cheapest - even without the 8% discount offered for using the sensors

Are there instructions? If it's the type I'm thinking of, they simply go on the floor with two pins/electrodes facing down - either in front of the kitchen bench or in the bathroom where there are sources of water. Water conducts electricity so when the floor is wet, it'll trigger the sensor.

Smoke sensor - anywhere really - but i'd put it on the opposite end of the place near the bedroom, but away from the kitchen.

Motion sensor goes either at the entrance or near the windows where entry to the property is likely.

The sensors should link to a hub and, as others have said, require an internet connection to issue alerts.
