ALDI Mobile - Change to $5 Starter PAYG SIM Conditions (Now has 60-day expiry, previously 365 days)

I have just noticed what I understand to be an important change to purchases of new Aldi $5 PAYG SIMs.

Instead of getting 365 days, as from 24 May 2023 the expiry validity upon activation of a new SIM will be 60 days. A subsequent PAYG recharge will then give a further 365 days expiry.

https://www.aldimobile.com.au/products/payg (click on "full plan details").

This could have major implications for those moving overseas, and wanting to "park" their Oz number as cheaply as possible for up to a year while away.

    Damn, this was my go to for keeping my spare number for the year 😭

    • Just use Amaysim.

      $10 gives you a year.

    Thanks for letting us know. So in other words the minimum cost will be $20.00 for 1 year & 60 days.

    $5 for the sim starter pack (60 days) + $15 recharge (365 days).

    Also noticed the rates are going up too -

    Australian Rates

    • Standard calls 12c per min, 15c from 24 May 2023
    • Standard SMS 12c each, 15c from 24 May 2023
    • Data 5c per MB, 6c from 24 May 2023

      @WatchNerd Technically $20 can give you validity/incoming of more than that, your figure is outgoing limit.

      I assume it is 60 days validity of $5 credit + followed by additional sim incoming capability of upto 90 days

      That's $5 prepaid sim alone 150 (60+90) days.

      +$15 recharge to give 1 year service.
      + followed by additional sim incoming capability of 90 days.

      So with addition of recharge gives you an additional 455 days (365+90) of incoming calls and text.

      in total 150+455 days = 605 days, round down to a nice even nearby number 600 days.

      • Good info.

        Bought this SIM pack today and was disappointed to go online and see that there had been a change, which I missed by less than a month. Being able to technically stretch it out to 600 days helps soften the disappointment a bit!

      Standard calls…15c from 24 May 2023

      1.I incurred $4.35 for a 29m call to fix a Lebara's sim-problem: 90% of the time was waiting for a free-operator to answer.
      Amaysim charge $0.29/m for 1300# -> https://www.amaysim.com.au/sim-plans/28-day-sim-plans/as-you…

      Call 2534 (ALDI) from your ALDImobile (it's a free call)
      Source-> https://www.aldimobile.com.au/pages/faq

      2.In reality, users WILL-BE charge for DATA-use & hence Aldi claim is FALSE.

      3.Finally, for those who are using DUAL-sim phone, use Aldi-sim as a 2nd-sim & want data-use from your 1st sim-card.
      EACH time you remove your sim-card-TRAY,
      a.RE-check your sims' DEFAULT settings, &
      b.make sure data-use ACTUALLY incurred via 1st sim-card….test-it
      Each phone work differently & ALL have some-quirks. Any UN-intended data-use via Aldi easily drain your funds-> 250Mb cost $15 ( $0.06 x 250 ) & that's very-little data if you are streaming/downloading movies.

    Thanks @WatchNerd.

    Also thanks OP for the heads up.

  • Will probably park at Amaysim from now on for $10/yr (unless they increase their pricing after this, too)

      It used to be no annual fee

      They must of realised

    • Why not Boost + $1 lyca + back to boost combo ?

      Makes profit overall.

        I thought there were horror stories with porting to/from lyca (like lebara)?

    • It's not exactly clear if you can buy a $2 SIM and just activate it and that's enough. It does read that if you are on a prepaid plan (e.g., 28-day plan), and that ends, you have 455 days to recharge and not lose your number (or port to some other provider).

      From: https://www.amaysim.com.au/content/dam/amaysim/documents/ter…

      10.3. Automatic Cancellation
      10.3.1. If you use the mobile Service Pre-paid Payment Option, the Service will be cancelled automatically if more than 455 days have passed since your last recharge of Airtime Credit (for the purposes of this clause, your last recharge may be Activation of your amaysim SIM Card). The 455 days indicated consists of a 365 day active period and a 90 day passive period. For more information on active and passive periods, please see the amaysim Mobile Service Description.

    Damn thanks for the heads up

  • +2

    Workaround, if applicable for your circumstance is to activate prior 24/5 to still have the 1-year benefit?

  • I am currently on boost sim. Can I port to also starter pack?

  • Many changes afoot by the look of things - they’ll be dropping the $15 plan this month too - if you’re on it you can stay on it, but you can never go back to it…
